TW... two of my campmates were inside when he set it on fire. They weren't together; one noticed the flames right away, and started moving through the space encouraging folks to get out; the other wandered out, then looked back and saw that the 'roof' was on fire. The first said later that he didn't really register what was happening, it never felt scary or unsafe, just strange to have unexpected fire overhead; according to him, there were about 40 people inside... a dangerous 'stunt', no??

40!?! That is crazy. The comments in the article originally posted speak of the "perfect opportunity" after years of discussing the idea. I assume that must mean finally some sort of guard had been let down, if only momentarily. But that alone does not make a perfect opportunity. It certainly explains all the anger directed toward Addis, which I had not understood until now.
What I don't understand now though, is why not charge him more adequately. Where before I thought boosting the property loss to 5k to get a felony was contemptible, I am now wondering why stronger charges like attempted manslauter weren't pursued. I'm guessing a plea bargain was made, but 40+ people callously endangered calls for something stronger IMO.
Just speculation on my part. Thanks for the additional info!
