Ehh..... we actually don't have too many of the stereotypical frat guys, yet. I mean, I'm the first (ever) openly gay guy in a fraternity at my university, so it's different. But, like I said, I tell most of them that it would be horrible, just because I know that they wouldn't appreciate it.theCryptofishist wrote:I was thinking of the proverbial "frat boys", but didn't want to step on Doc's toes...Ugly Dougly wrote:Eh? The way I see it is, the norm is not normal on the Playa, so being normal while on the Playa is abnormal and you'll fit right in.Ugly Dougly wrote:Afraid I might be too vanilla for Burning Man.
Or something like that.
I've never been to TTITD so I cannot describe it. Camping and drinking is always fun, the rest is just gravy.

I say that what they hear about it is mainly true, and for myself, mainly false. The people who I believe would really love it, I can't get them to show any interest, like getting a cat to watch t.v.

Burning Man isn't about the stuff you see when you get there ....it's about the people that brought that stuff there

Burning man can be explained.

Reminds me of an xkcd:gyre wrote:Burning man can be explained.

http://xkcd.com/566/Morpheus: Unfortunately, no one can explain what the Matrix is, you have to experience it for yourself.
Trinity: Sure you can, it's a computer simulation in which you live, thinking it's reality.
Neo: Oh.
Morpheus: What...
Trinity: Look, maybe you just suck at explaining.
I think that it is hard to explain because there is so much to do at Burning Man, and different people get wildly different things out of it. By analogy, it is hard for me to describe what living in Nashville is like for the average person, because the experience depends so much on what one does in the city.

Re: How to explain burning man to friends?

I like that.
You don't have to tell people what the experience will be, to explain the event.
I can describe nashville without telling someone what their experience will be.

It’s like being simultaneously slapped over every inch of your body with national anthem singing fish by an enraged harem of nubile bear women in latex. The pleasure is unquestionably unique.

That is amazing....the only way it could get any better is if you had mentioned bacon somewhere in it. It's kind of like Woodstock, but with 1/10 the people, in the desert, with more visual art, less live music (in terms of total wattage), and mostly hipsters instead of hippies.

I like that one as well.... it's a good, decent answer and it would keep most of the people I know from wanting to go with me.
