PSS, I'm a technophile so OpenBTS is awesome. I see lots of applications for it in the civilized world. I still don't like the idea of cell service in BRC. Half the reason I go to BRC is to get away from all the mundane happenings of the real world, including being someplace on time and dealing with phone calls!!
Either way, I love the project!

I agree. One thing I love about Death Valley and the nearby Panamint Valley is no electromagnetic radiation (at least the parts I've been in.) I loved not being able to get any radio stations or cell phone signal while I was there last March. Would that Black Rock Desert remain ever in a big electromagnetic shadow as well. Too much to ask I suppose. (I'll admit I do like that main BRC radio station.)Kinetic V wrote: The Black Rock Desert should stay a klystron free zone and the same goes for supercows. There was one camp blasting NPR. There are worse things to make a whole city block listen to but I still wish people could show up and just be without technology for a week.Kinetic V wrote:I hope the equipment to provide cell coverage gets forgotten or gets annihilated in a playa dust storm. If they keep providing reliable cell phone coverage it's only a matter of time till someone hauls an old TV transmitter out there...that's the last thing we need.

Oh, and after spending quite a while thinking about it I came to the conclusion that cell service during pre-build is a real gift to the community. Lots of people can get a week off work but not everyone can get 3 weeks completely away from their work responsibilities. And then there are the emergency "Hey, pick up 100ft of gauge 2 braided steel cord when you pass through Reno" or some such emergency last minute purchase. I hope that by Monday at midnight the service dies and the iPhones stay securely in everyone's car.
It was better next year. -Burners
