Noooooooo! BM:The Musical
How did this get greenlighted by BM IP? Some kind of recurring revenues scheme?

Why no? Because many burners believe micro marketing of the event to artists, non-moopers, and consent understanders who really participate is superior.
That is anti-the event macro marketing and broadcasting itself to the world resulting a dogs breakfast significant enough to be destructive of the event culture cluelessness we have.
BTW any "here's what you need to know" framing is lazy. If you are paying attention, you know what you need to know! Don't insult the reader, respect them.

Re: Noooooooo! BM:The Musical
I've sent a note off to the IP team to find out whether these folks actually have the org's blessing.
The org can't stop someone from using Burning Man as a setting for a novel/play/movie, but they do have a say in whether or not their IP can be used (which would presumably include the use of "Burning Man" in the title, logos, etc).

If it turns out that BM Org isn't down for this rip off...Tell me what you think of this idea. 10 very capable people go to the show and film it. Afterwards they cobble together the video of the entire show and post it online. "Save your money. See it here for free." Would that help or hurt the production?

Don’t know about the merit of that method, but it sure would be some more than appropriate culture jamming in the old-school cacophony spirit.Ratty wrote: ↑Tue Nov 12, 2019 10:15 amIf it turns out that BM Org isn't down for this rip off...Tell me what you think of this idea. 10 very capable people go to the show and film it. It is just a parody of BM.... and judging from the 5 minute YouTube video a pretty good one. Tickets are FREE. Apply for those FREE tickets http://burningmanthemusical.com/ before 15 Nov. What's not to like?
How many old burners does it take to change a light bulb? Just one to change the bulb..... and five more to reminisce how good the old bulb was....

Re: Noooooooo! BM:The Musical
Just a follow-up. Here's what I got back from the IP team:
So yeah - not something the org is promoting, but also not something they can really do anything about. This musical has not been authorized by Burning Man Project. We understand it to be a parody of and commentary on our event, and the use of our name is arguably a fair use under the law. But we want to ensure people aren't confused into thinking our organization is involved, so we contacted the producers earlier this week, and they added a note to their promotions for this project to make clear there is no affiliation with us.
