Disco Man burns the way he wants!

Post by heat » Thu Sep 11, 2003 4:41 pm

I am always a little sad each year about how much I hear peops gripe about how The Man "didn't work" cause his arm/s didn't stay up, or whatever. I thought he did a glorious Disco, and say he always dances the way he wants before he burns! How bout you? How 'bout a word from those who build and raise him?

Disco sucks

After all the time, effort, planning and resources, it'd be nice if they worked once in a while. It's like never winning the World Series after being in the playoffs year after year. However, the curse of the one-armed man lives on.

Next year...

I exclaimed the same thing "Look he's disco!", which I quite enjoyed. It was unexpected and kind of fitting that he dance to his own tune! :)

ROLLERMAN

how the playa works in mysterious ways......

camping at tom jones rollerdisco this year, i felt the man was telling me something when he dropped his arm. especially since i was a ranger in the perimeter at 4:00. When the arms rose everyone was ready and exicited. There was a guy with a camera taking pictures, I talked to him finding out who he was and if he was allowed in the perimeter. He was one of the architects of the man and he was so excited that "WE DID IT!!!" When I told him it was not over yet, the man has not burned yet, he was jsut excited that their wsa a locking device use to hold the arms up and in place. They were not sure how it was gonna work since they did little tesing, but the arms were up and they did not have to have a team of people holding the cable to keep the arms up. Only minutes later did the left arm come falling down. He was not around for me to see his reaction. But hey!!! He did burn and in the coolest roller disco fashion!!!

A few years ago ('99?), he not only kept both arms down, but spontaneously combusted from the center, which set off all the fireworks...and at the same time began a shoulder-shaking movement that looked for all the world like he was going to walk off across the playa! We were all amazed and at least where I was , cheered like mad.
Walking, Discoing, it's his dance and it's all bueno! If it was the same every year, would it not be predictable and...routine? ...something BMan-the -event never is for me!

I believe that was a deliberate attempt to bring the man down. My favorite
part that year was that there were a lot of unexploded fireworks still in
the head and torso when the man fell. The crowd surged forward. I did
not. The fireworks started exploding. The crowd came back.

Our camp refers to that as "the year the man was assasinated". Duke & I were privilaged enough to here a radio conversation...I'm sure this is not verbatim (few years ago) but it was along the lines of "Hey, I found some kind of electrical problem...Shit! Sorry guys!" That was when the chest went off & the guy part way up on the man came down mighty fast.

Duke said "that guys Playa name should be Brown Comet."

I'll admit that when the man fell & was shooting fireworks out his top straight into the crowd - that I intentionally went right into where they were shooting - I watched the people in silhouette as they got hit & just rolled letting the fireworks careen off their backs - and I wanted to play too!

It was lovely.

mmm - sparkle-y.

I dunno, I saw a Heil Larry rather than a Disco Man. I guess its the Jew in me that kinda sqirms at that symbolic stance.

My favorite dream of BM is that for the 2005 burn, "they" had found a way to animate the man. As the burn began, a flaming Man broke free and walked across the playa stopping to dance along the way. He walked until he fell apart and the crowd went wild.

It was kinda neat.

Who gives a shit how he burns or if he burns at all? That's not the point.
