Holding space for other camps etiquette????
Asked this last year. I'll ask again.
What's the etiquette for holding space in other, non-theme camp neighborhoods for future arrivals? Each year we show up early Monday to find large patches of land cordoned off, without anyone nearby: the absent landlord technique.
I can understand reserving a reasonable amount of space around your camp for future arrivals, but big unattended chunks?
Don't want to cause ill will but each year we're tempted to ignore such land grabs and settle in.
What's the protocol?

The protacol MIGHT be: Find a placement person to back you up and then settle in. In one of the placement threads, one of the mappers of the city had a few interesting things to say. His name may contain frog (it does on tribe) or french, i'm not sure right now, but he was very open and honest with our questions so private messaging him and asking him or asking him on the board adn pming him to make sure he sees it seems like it might get you a useful answer.
Note because he was open and honest and helpful, please be polite to him; we don't want to burn someone out because he happens to do good work.
You might also ask a Ranger on playa. It's possible that one could get on the radio and find a placement type person or otherwise check on the status of the space.
If people are "land-rushing" space that they don't use, I'm not sure how polite one should be in taking it away again. One wants to avoid an ugly scene, but aren't they taking advantage of your reluctance to cause one, thereby getting thier way year after year?
but I wax philosophical.

Seconded and kudos to you for pointing that out. :) The Frog as been golden to us the past couple of years so be good to him, all. Ditto that for gomonk, Harley, Lady Bee, Moose, Burnscar, and there's gotta be others that I'm forgetting...theCryptofishist wrote:..

As BM gets more and more popular and intergrated into the mainstream dominant culture, you're going to see more of this type of real-estate speculation. It is important to position yourself effectively to be able to take advantage of these market irregularities and squeeze the maximum profits out of this situation. It's similar to arbitrage, but the felony convitions don't carry jail sentences that are as onerous.
So what are the secrets of Black Rock City Real Estate Speculation? Ah my friend, the answer to that is too complicated for this little white box (even with the scroll bar directly to the right), this is a job for the much vaunted
THREE DAY SEMINAR!
That's right, this year, at regulary scheduled intervals, the blyslv will be sharing his secrets of successful Black Rock City Real Estate Speculation.
Participants in this seminar will learn the following:
1. Duct tape vs. surveyor's tape: applications, contraindications and use of color for desired effect.
2. Frog motivators: What prompts this man, what impels him to his unselfish and unflagging service to the citizens of this fair burg? More important, how can you use this knowledge to create your own Desired Outcome? Discussions will center on the use of tequila or the White Bordaux.
3. The "ins and outs" of early arrival. This module will focus on list manipulation, effective whining at will call, numbers inflation for the benefit of next year's BLM Permit negotiation and how to camoflauge chronic slacking.
4. Two dimensional modeling of curved space. This is not for Stephen Hawking geeks. Instead we will investigate how to use various types of mapping software to chisel your neighbors out of prime space. Using algorythems developed by a sufi mystic trance dance spin-meister, you can hoodwink, bamboozle and generally give the bum's rush to those less gifted in symbolic and noosphere manipulation.
Space is limited in these exclusive seminars, act soon.
Hear what these former students/current BRC Real Estate tygoons say about the seminar:
"blyslv really opened my eyes about gritty urban decay and how to turn it to my advantage."
The girl with Fairy Wings and large pupils
"If it wasn't for this seminar, I'd still be camped in Uranus."
Svart, former Death Guilder, current Earth Gaurdian
"This seminar was not as much fun as the three days I spent trapped at the Temple of Atonement, but don't let that scare you."

Sorry, word on tribe is that frog has already left for the playa, so he's not a likely source of information.
so, ask at the gate and that information will be bad or good depending on whatever.
If you find a place that you like and it's blocked off an abandoned, I'd suggest parking some of your people there and sending others off to center camp to find someone who can give you some sort of answer. Or go guerilla and be prepared for a sh*tstorm or settle for some unsettled territory. Next year ask in mid July when people working for the llc can still be found.
Sorry, but that's what's I've got.

Make sure to horrd your Playabucks this year.. I hear were in for a super night time show from a major fucking band. The only thing holding up the offical announcment is how many trailer's they need and how to keep the burners from the Kraft food trucks... But mid week center camp will be shut down for ticket holders only. Last year I got good Playa bucks for full bags of MOOP turned in to the recycle camp. Man back in 98' the cher concert just blew everyone..yojessimac wrote:So I got a newb Question:
What are playa bucks, what are they good for, do I really need these to survive on the playa, and if so, where do I get some?
Or are playa bucks considered the goods I bring along to exchange with others?
Thank!

Last year my camp kept getting pushed around by people who were holding space - and I don't mean enough space for 2 rvs or a couple of cars, I'm talking about half a block. It was really bumming me out, especially since it was my first burn and seemed out of the "spirit" of burning man. We finally found someone willing to give up enough of their half a block of space they had "reserved" (not a theme camp of any sort) and let us park our rv, 23 ft - the smallest rv we could find. They seemed really put out by us asking too. By the end of the burn they never even came closing to using all the space they had taken either.
While we were setting up camp, the pizza sluts came by with a pizza to say hi. It made the world of difference to me. The pizza sluts are awesome.

I have noticed this hoarding of real estate getting worse each year. People mark off huge amounts of space that are still sitting empty by Friday. I find it totally out of the spirit and disheartening. This year we arrived on Monday and still couldn't find a roadside spot inside of Guess big enough for our truck and shelter. We squeezed in between 2 camps that had roped off areas but stayed 20 feet from the road to respect their boundaries. By Friday no on had claimed this area still. Some other people arrived and we welcomed them into our neighborhood (there was plenty of room behind us in the middle of the block). We woke up to find they secured their tent UNDER the front of our car such that we could not even walk between because they decided they wanted that choice piece of roadside real estate. It was very disappointing and disrespectful. Cause for a little frustration and unnecessary drama. Ugh...next year I think I'll hit the outer perimeter since I'm not willing to hoard.

"The problem with hording is that not enough people experiencing getting pushed around bother to notify the Rangers or Camp Placement."
Wow, so are you saying that the problem is my fault for not complaining? Who am I to say that it is not within the right of these camps to rope off these areas...and hence give me a valid reason to complain? And even if I did complain (to who?), what kind of experience would I have camping next to these individuals for the week? [/quote]

That's not what I meant to suggest at all. Personally, I think you have a damn valid complaint. It's unfortunate that you and your campmates felt compelled to move by bullyish behavior of those who'd stake out a Rhode Island size piece of real estate. What I meant to suggest is that if you or someone from your camp had decided that enough was enough that there were people in BRC to go to. There are mechanisms in place in dealing with land grabbers.Wow, so are you saying that the problem is my fault for not complaining?

Sorry for barking Isotopia. I guess I'm just not aware of what these mechanisms are, and from the sounds of things a lot of people feel the same. Who would one talk to? And again, if I did complain and finangle some space I don't know how pleasant it would be to be neighbors for a week with these folks.
Theme Camp placement is probably the first place to go to. Usually if the people in question have staked out a huge site then all attempts to remedy the situation come into play. Frog with theme camp placment usually has the final say and he's prtyy good at seeing the dividing line between folks who hold for one or two cars coming a day later vs. Visigoths trying to stake out all of Rome.
