Name changers on ePlaya. do you like them?
name changers seem to be quite popular on the ePlaya BBS. i've heard through the grapevine that they tend to be a nusance. people that change thier names often tend to be unstable and have multiple personalities.
( i myself dont mind multiple personalities, especially the sexual, musical/artistic and digital ones....... well depending on which personalities dont pertain to me.....selfish huh?)
just wondered what others thought.

I don't know about the multiple personalities part.
I do have another persona which I had to create because initially the new version of this board wouldn't let me go with my original. Emily asked me if I wanted to get rid of it and I decided against it because I do like arguing with myself at times. That's probably another personality quirk altogether..

Now as a man who recently changed his name, I'm indifferent to it all. People change, normally it would be a problem, but as it would appear the name does nothing really to affect to profile, contacting is the same. It just takes a couple seconds longer. It's not as if they are abandoning everything and setting up a new profile
Please forget the words that I just blurted out
It wasn't me, it was my strange and creeping doubt

Like Alice, The Empress, Princess Strych-9? I liked the Princess...I know it's the same person but the name was cool.DIGIMAN wrote:obviously we are not speaking of mistakes or ePlaya boo boo's as you can see the poll has an issue.

Since she's no longer using it I could always swipe it for a second account and have some fun with it.....
But as much as I post under Kinetic I wouldn't have time to use it much....so I'll pass.
Best way to save face around here is to cop that you fucked up, were wrong in your post, or never considered a particular point.mabey to either to make things intersting or someone trying to save face.
PJ himself won my complete and total admiration a while back when he copped to never having considered a particular point of view that I was pretty invested in emotionally. Not to say that mine was the 'right' one or anything. Just that he considered what was perhaps an alien point of view and acknowledged the merits of it in such a way as to suggest that he might have been limited in his consideration of the issue. For me that was as fine an example of dialogue as I can remember in recent memory
Now if I could just convince of of how very, very wrong that glove thing of his is...

she changes her clothes a lot, too!
As for me, i really like my name and I am sticking with it. I Have been searching for a nikname that will stick for along time, as i have a very common name. I tried an alternate spelling of my first name, but it only caught on with a couple people, but those people have been using it for 8 years and I recently revived it because I joined a club for people with my first name and it is just less confusing, but i wont sign my name that way because I like that I have the same first and last initail. I tried using a number, as I am the 8th generation of women in my family with the same first name, but people thought it was a stupid trekkie thing. I also tried using the name of a character I drew when i was in college, but that only caught on with one person, and ANGRY BUTTERFLY just seems to be alot more successful that the other nickname, it should it really fits me.

I took the road less traveled, and now I would like to go back and find the paved one.

There is NOTHING wrong with it, It is perfect, I finaly found the perfect nickname after years of searching, I thought that was the story i told, it was my point anyway, damn adhd.. I actualy am in the process of making a couple avitars I cant decide wether to put my real picture up or a cartoon. Princess/empress/Alice/nymph had one for me, too, it is more a matter of hooking up my camera and and not being able to decide than anything else, but I would LOVE to see yours.

I have two completely unrelated problems with name changes.
1. It disturbs continuity. I was away when strych-9 changed (via others?)
to alice. It took me a bit to figure out who this alice was, and to apply
some context to her posts. Now, if she wanted to be a completely new
persona presumably she wouldn't have tried to continue threads she'd
started as strych-9. Capital J, thanks for keeping your avatar. That made
for adequate continuity for me.
2. Abuse of the system is just annoying. If the abuse comes in the form of
changing names and personas for the purposes of pissing people off, then
I have no time for it.
But people who just want to change their names? <shrug> Whatever.

If I were designing this board from scratch, I'd probably require real names.
Anybody would be free to supply one or more nicknames in their profile, with links to other bbs's where using them is tolerated.
One reason I've used my real name is specifically because I've worked with some of the Burning Man groups who put the event together, and I simply don't want to mislead people when I write something about the event.
But I learned the habit long ago from others who did the same, on other online forums --- voluntarily, because they all had respect for standing by one's word. It's a convention that many forums require, because it leads too easily to dishonesty, distrust, thoughtless blather, and general abuse.
And while some people seem a bit coy about the whole plonking business (the proposal for an "Ignore user" function, to filter their posts from view), I would not be shy at all about denying access to people crapping all over the board.

Bob, I prefer the accountability of using your real name, but with the proliferation of playa names in BRC itself, the chances of getting the admins to toss out the member list and implement such a rule seem to be slim. Especially with almost 3000 users on board and more coming in daily. If this could have been the rule upfront when they turned on the new board, great. But it wasn't and so we have the current mess.
Since the changeover to real names has such long odds of happening, I don't see very much the etf can implement right now that will address the problem...besides PLONK. The PLONK feature implements one of the key features of dealing with trolls and that is to ignore them. For some of us it's too irresistable sometimes to keep from responding, so the PLONK feature serves as a self-policing feature for ourselves. And it cuts off the attention that the troll thrives on.
As for the availablilty of a phpBB plonk option that's discussed elsewhere. And yes this represents another flip flop for me on the issue, but sometimes new discoveries force one to change their tune.

>almost 3000
there aren't 3000 users of this board.
1/3 of em have never posted, another good chunk are sock puppets or messed up registration efforts.
i'm unclear on how you'd enforce real names, though. require users to fax in a copy of their drivers license? verfiy via real email? both of those would would still not prevent me from using my playa name...

My real name is easy to find out. I post under my real name on Tribe and SF Raves. I was posting under my real name on Friendster, but changed to a nickname (Xarah) that is known to all my friends to avoid confusion because My first name is Sarah and it gets very confusing because I have a number of friends and realatives with that same first name, and some people were paraniod about my using my full name in chat rooms and BBSes. I chose Angry Butterfly because it's my Playa Name.
I took the road less traveled, and now I would like to go back and find the paved one.

Dunno, up until the last 6 months I'd used the same nickname for 10 years. Then along comes a memory from my childhood and here I am w/ this new name. Though I have no problems with using of real names, I have friends that refer to me by either DM or my old nickname.
Plus, my first name isn't nearly as cool as Bob. Though if I went by my middle name I could... Nah, wouldn't want to usurp the name of Bob here. I'd get lynched...

In my experience, real names are more of a convention than a requirement, in use on forums with more of an expectation of honesty and responsibility. I certainly don't expect it to ever be used or enforced here, by people who ironically expect to have some sort of credibility chatting under the nickname "Puke Bunny" or whatever.
I'd never blame or even ask the admins about it -- like DPW, they're just mechanics, and don't set policy.
