early draft of 10 principles?

Post by swampdog » Thu Aug 20, 2009 8:26 am

I found this somewhere on the interwebs. Any chance it's an early draft of the 10 principles?
-----
Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. Should anyone refuse to invite you to be a full member of their camp, their bar, or their artwork because they say you have invested no thought, effort, or planning into it, they are clearly Assholes and Don’t Get It.
Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. So shut up already about my preparedness and give me a fucking drink.
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience. We hate to be reminded that we spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on crap from big box stores, oil companies, vehicle rentals and other gas guzzling transport. Please remove all the labels from everything so that we can maintain the illusion that we are outside of the normal world that we depend on so heavily. For instance, please pretend that you own a big box truck and decommodify it by creatively covering over the name of the people you rented it from. “U-haulâ€

No... I think that's the edited version that leads some to believe that "Buring Man" is getting worse every year.

Isn't that the "Fucktard Bill of Rights" ?

(OK, I tried to come up with something more clever, but am in awe of such
a magnificently sarcastic skewering of the 10 principles).
It's not because I'm old. Your music actually does suck.

I agree with Gizmo, because while I may still be a newbie, I've spent possibly too much of my time studying everything about Burning Man and am fairly confident someone is in a very subtle way insulting the values/principles of Burning Man. Maybe it's obvious but I'm still new to this forum so sorry if I've just made an ass of myself.

we're all asses here.

it's a fine skewering. i think the first line of each section is a direct lift from the standard.

I hate to explain a joke, but I'll make the exception. I made this by adding a bit to each of the original 10 principles to turn them into the bizarro version. The joke is, this is the 10 principles as interpreted by, for instance, some of the people who visit eplaya and then leave when someone points out their utter lack of self-reliance. This is the 10 principles of gimme, 10 principles of judgment, the 10 principles of lazy.

Swampdog, that post of yours should be a candidate for "Best of Eplaya". The wrapping the yarn around two twigs and calling it art got me laughing so damn hard it hurts.

thanks, guys. It was fun. And Bob, I guess LPB was the only poster who wasn't hip to the joke, but I figured he might be a representative sample. Better answer: If you're not getting the joke then I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU!
