even if i will have no money , no car , no camp . i will find the way to kiss the playa ground and grasp as much dust as i can and will be the most happy person on the planet when i get there ! , i will walk by foot 500 miles if necessary , i will make the unbelievable to become so easy , just to have one more moment inside the most incredible event ever designed by imagination and blessed by the most hardcore talent on the planet . even while typing this words i feel that my soul is constantly there for ever . thats the place i belong to - i meant to blend with creativity! and if there is a home for me , its black rock city ! ~Siago~

Now that I think though. If you have no money for anything to get out there how are you going to afford the food and the water and everything else that you need for basic survival..hrm

I have no right to be snarky. 2010 will be my first trip.
But after attending regionals a few times, planning and MOAR planning, and making sure I've read everything I think I can, I still don't feel ready.

How did you feel on your first trip, or whilest planning your first trip, vets?

Just curious...

Don't make it too complicated.
It is whatever you want it to be.
Participate in what you want and skip what you're not into.
Bring everything you need for a week of hot, dry, windy, camping
then relax and enjoy yourself.
That's it.

Huh. I guess my snark meter is on the fritz...

Forgive me for asking details on a non-complicated answer, OnceTheDustClears, but what would be making it TOO complicated?

What should I NOT be worrying about, that I probably am, as a first timer?

Biggest worry right now is budgeting for me. I can afford to over budget as much as possible, but I refuse to budget too short... and not sure an overall cost for my trip from my area... And it's up to me (the mom personality) to take care of our new camp this year...

I just bought my fourth ticket, and I'm not a vet. My first year I didn't realize that the stuff (beyond survival essentials) I was bringing was not great stuff, and in hindsight, not as valuable as what I could do for others: take a kimono out of a bike chain, or chase moop down the street in a dust storm. What you are bringing for fun should be fun to bring, not herculean tasks to accomplish, or loot to accumulate. Eliminate the things that weren't used, or enjoyed. These are still notes to myself, ymmv.

to no car no camp no money: nothing wrong with a plan. baby steps o.k.?

Worrying too much about all the details.

You said you've read everything, been to regionals, and live in a hot climate.

You're good to go.

I totally believe you can do it!!! Just make sure you have the appropriate amount of water and at least some food. If you try hard enough u'll easily get a ride and worse case scenario u can wait outside the gate for a day or 2 with a sign that u need a ticket to see if anyone gifts a ticket to will call.

Remember, we make our own luck! ~ So make good luck!

You don't need to spend a zillion dollars and buy one of everything you think you might need or rent an expensive RV.

You do need to plan and prepare and it does take a little money and organization.

Although you don't need to officially be part of a camp and people do help each other out,
no one likes a hanger-on who shows up unprepared and expects everyone else to take care of them.

Do some planning and save a few pennies or wait til next year.

SO many people BUST THEIR ASSES and sacrifice a lot, to afford to go to Burning Man. Try it. It will actually mean you'll get there and not be a burden on anybody else.

Why is it so easy to say that you'll walk 500 miles, yet so hard to find a rental car???

I didn't know about Burning Man, or know any burners, or been to regionals... I just found the event online at random in about Feb. or March of 2001. I bought tickets and printed out the survival guide. I wasn't on eplaya. I told Larry what we needed, he made sure it happened. I read about it in Via, the Triple A magazine after I'd bought tickets. So yes, I was excited, very prepared, but I had no "this will alter my life" expectations whatsoever. Which it did, it was really like going "home", as I'd lived in SF back in the 70s and the event really had that Project Artaud vibe which I thought no longer existed.

What lame fucking advice.

The only good thing about no-loads hanging out at the Gate is that it guarantees that local law enforcement boot them off the premises and escort (or carry) into town.

So yeah, come out to the gate and hang out with your finger pointing to the sky while you wait for your fucking 'miracle.'

Well, if you're gonna "walk by foot 500 miles" (from where?) you might want
to start no later than the middle of the first week of August.
At 20 miles a day times 25 days =5oo miles

One time during Exodus this old hippie walked up and asked us if we were headed for "Frisco." Said, no, sorry, we weren't and he told us that this was his tenth burn, and only the third time he couldn't find a ride home...
