An esplanade is a long, open, level area, usually next to a river or large body of water, where people may walk. I lived on one in Maryland, along a glorified duckpond.

That's not it, by the way:

Larry's joke may be that the "playa" is not a beach on the edge of a real lake, but a dry lake bed.

There's an Esplanade in Chico.

There's also a Broadway Street.

That is awsome Victorian :D I didn't even know we had a branch office for COFFEE CAMP in New Orleans :P Our camp (to the best of my knowledge) exists only in PlayaLand---we camp & are camping 2010 at about 8:05 & "C" (the lat. & long. address makes more sense if you have/when you see the BM map layout) swing by for a cup o' joe this year, may even have some tea handy

on the topic of streets...

I live right next to Bacon street, and can't help but think of the playa every time I see it...

... then again, my town is Burning Man, just at the beach and all year round. The commerce exists here only to suit that last requirement in this (somewhat, and rapidly changing) modern day....
