whats the deal with leaving early?
whats the deal with leaving early?
Hello,
So my boss is adamant on not allowing me to have labor day weekend off. I fear I will loose my job if I disobey this, but have been planning to go to burning man longer than I have had the job. Will I be allowed to leave early and is it even worth it?
thanks,
Rex

Re: whats the deal with leaving early?
Some people prefer to leave early.
The mood of the city changes as more and more people arrive. Things get crowded. People get crasser. Personally, I'm not planning to leave early, I'm squeezing as much out of the event as I can, but I don't go to the burns. They just aggravate me. I don't deal well with crowds. If you're willing to do it, then do it. You can always find (or at least look for) a more accommodating job over the course of the year.

You can leave whenever you want, don't worry about that. I would not lose my job over seeing the burn, that's me. I didn't see the man burn my first year. My new neighbor friends had left, and to be honest I was overwhelmed by the week. I had had enough, in the best way possible. I was a little lonely, and just decided to get along home. The next year, I did see the burn, but because there had been a dust storm all day, and I couldn't get my tent down. I don't think it is the penultimate experience to be had at Burning Man. I wouldn't beat myself up if I left early, might do so again. Missing the exodus traffic is definitely a plus. It's a hell of a campfire, a real kick to the hindbrain as MDF has said, but for me, it's not the definitive event there.

I've left as early as Saturday afternoon, as late as Tuesday. Honestly, I'd rather leave early than late. Get there so you hit Gate Sunday night so you can enjoy as much of the week as you can, but it will still be there next year. Maybe your boss will even give you the weekend off next year since you've shown how willing you are to work with them!

Typically on Burn day we would pack up, hook up the art car and trailer and kinda say goodbye to everyone, watch the Burn then take naps if possible then leave the playa at around 4am. No traffic... smooth ride home and enough time to stop for Indian tacos then breakfast buffet in Sparks. I have only seen the Temple Burn once and I can take it or leave it, its nice to see, but by that time I am ready for the comforts of defaulta!

and the sad thing is.. even those people who DO get time off of work.. often fear using it... not wanting to seem 'lazy', or give a reason to get fired.

I think that's partially why Americans on the whole are so much less adventurous than the Europeans. The Europeans on our camp's facebook page make posts about the really adventurous places they go to in addition to Burning Man. Lately South America has been popular with them. The Americans post pictures of what they're eating for dinner and pictures of their pets.lemur wrote:rexhex wrote:Hello,

And what if we get heavy rains toward the end of the week? Might all get stranded for a while.

There is a plan for that as well. I too have left early like Eric. Personally I see two big surges of exodus - one right after the man burns since people that must be back to work on Monday have packed and have the car ready to go, and again after the Temple burn for the same reason.

For the vacation time statistics, I'm going to play the devil's Republican and say: if it's a problem, get a better job or move somewhere else. If you can't, tough luck.
Those graphs are showing statutory minimum paid vacation by country, not how much paid vacation people actually receive depending on their jobs. No, the US does not have any minimum number of paid vacation days. However, 77% of private industry workers do receive paid vacations; though as lemur points out it's situational as to whether people feel they can take them.
I guess it comes down to whether you're considered valuable. Higher-paid workers receive more vacation time. Lower-paid and part-time workers don't. It's the perks of being valuable as an employee. If you're working at the bottom of the totem serving coffee at a mall coffee vendor shop, you shouldn't be expecting much anyway.

I will need to leave the 29th - is it possible to just get a ride from someone there? Or so I need to figure it out ahead of time?

Re: whats the deal with leaving early?
It's actually easier to catch a ride when you're heading out. From what I've seen, people just don't want to commit ahead of time, but if you ask around, you'll find several people leaving when you want to and you can hitch a ride with them.

its true.
TONS of people seem to ride in with an empty passenger seat only to find out that it was empty on the way out.
