Next years Theme
There is the argument that themes suck. yes and no. whatever. I think next years theme should be SOUND/AURAL Art/MUSIC. I'd like it if as many as people who think this is a pretty good idea would speak up!! Maybe the BMOrg/Larry will hear it and consider it.
Think of what it could inspire (grant funds go to artist who follow the theme.) From more live music out on the Playa!!! (something that is greatly missed) to Sound ART to SOUND Sculptures to Mutant instruments. Music has a lot of power create INTERACTION and COMMUNITY, and of course RADICAL FREE EXPRESSION. Myself, I would certainly contribute to this...
There have been times 2001-2003 where the PING of the submarine bus followed by the sound of machine GUN fire just cracked my ass up and made my night. Remember the DICE JAZZ CLUB.. AWesome. Out on the PLaya at night, imagine SOUNDS that are on par with the SIGHTS!
I SAY MORE AURAL ART!!!!!!! Make it a theme!

I have only one problem with that. Sound travels all over the place and you can't "close your ears" to escape it. I can imagine thousands of pieces of audio art all squaking, squeeking, singing, whatever all at the same time 24x7 .... it would be enough to drive someone mad. But at least blind people would be able to criticize the art too.
Maybe we should take the "Greater acceptance through lower standards" approach ... make the theme drugs and loud music. There certainly would be more active participants that way. And besides, something that might not be art might actually become art once the proper dosage is ingested. But that kind of art is like TV.
Hey, how about a year without a theme ... call it ... Cacophony. Is that aural enough?

Theme suggestion...
I'd love to see a "power's of 10" theme. Alternately, this theme could be called "macro micro", "Size matters", or "new perspective". While we see a lot of this at burning man already, it would give people an excuse to look at the tiniest of details or global impacts. From a practical point of view, big things could be small, and small could get blown up to astronomical propostions. Imaging amoeba art cars, BRC in a box, a 120 foot tall man, the human flea circus, worlds largest kite, circuit board village, etc, etc.
Just a thought...

oh goodie, somewhere to spout my totally uninformed opinion!
how about a movement related theme? most of what i have seen suggested could fall under this category...loud music, makes people move. cool art, makes people move (as in jump up and down, crawl on it, run around it...that sort of thing) firedancers, moving, theme cars, moving...bikes...you get my drift. as a dancer person i would love to see more interactive installations that get people into the act by having them move in certain ways that react to or become a part of the art. i want to do something like that for next year anyways, make a piece on the playa where you can come and be a dancer, no matter what your experience or abilities may be, to feel a part of a larger something where you can have fun and make something beautiful without having to actually rehearse. but i digress...i think the theme should be ANYTHING THAT MOVES MOVES YOU

Next year's theme was likely decided on months ago. They just won't tell us nobodies about it. Several people reading this board probably know it and could give us a hint (something to do with time, or lava, or eggs, etc) but they won't because we'll bring it to their attention that it sucks and should be changed.
The 2007 theme may not have been completely thought out yet, why don't we give suggestions for that?

I've already suggested "The Elements." Do a search on it and you'll probably turn up the thread. As I remember, it was a hit.
Some other ideas:
The ORG seems to be basing themes depending on what they see out there. So far we've done: Gods and rituals, Sun Moon 'n Stars, Water, Time, Anatomy, Fertility, Aliens. They'll probably do Animals next and let Black Rock Animal Control have their day in the sun.
Flight. See lots of wings out there. Too bad the massive Kite Launch didn't come off this year, I brought three kites out for it.
Music would be a good one, but too accessible to the lowest common denominator. It's easier to load up an I-Pod with a bazillion MP3's than to care for a cello or a taiko drum. We'd have even more frackin' rave camps.

Illusions. That would be nice and art-friendly. Set up optical illusions or indulge in a bit of Escherian geometry, trompe l'oeils, things that appear one way and are another...

They're doing a Champagne theme?!?
Now there's an irony. A winter wonderland in the middle of summer. Da Hat & Co. don't have a deal cut with the weather gods now, right?

Theme: Nothingness
I caught Larry Harvey in a bar in the upper Haight last week. I asked him what the theme for 05 might be. He first said he couldn't tell me, but after I bought him a couple drinks, he started to loosen up, and eventually told me. He said the theme will be "Into the Void". Nothingness. Nihilism.
Everyone and everything will be painted tan so we blend in with the playa. We should make no noise or make any light which would interrupt the darkness.
So there you have it, straight from the horses mouth!
Can't wait to start my art project which I am calling "one square meter of typical playa surface"

I caught Larry the year before last on lower Haight. I asked him what the theme for 04 might be. He first said he couldn't tell me, but after I bought him a couple drinks, he started to loosen up, and eventually told me. He said the theme would be "Dante's Seven Rings of Hell".... you see where that one ended up.
BTW, given the amount of booze fueled, tit-groping, assholiness exhibited by the yahoos this year, I'm thinking the theme ought to be based on Milton's Paradise Lost.
". . . . . . Hail horrours, hail
Infernal world, and thou profoundest Hell
Receive thy new Possessor; One who brings
A mind not to be chang'd by Place or Time.
The mind is its own place, and in it self
Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n..."
