You keep telling yourself that, but I just don't think this is "for the children" so much as for yourself.

Misinformation was and to some degree still is a "thing" in BRC.
I guess having people who don't yet know how things really work teaching other new people can work, if you look at it that way,

You won't even "get" what I just said...

This'll be my sixth burn since my first in '03.

As time goes on and my infrastructure has increased (yurt v. tent, etcetera) I've steadily brought more stuff. I've never needed it all, nor do I ever expect to, but I've wound up needing a different subset each year that I couldn't have predicted in advance.

17th year and 16th year running a camp. Happy to say no sophomore thing for me. I was totally intimidated until about my 4th year.

I'm a sucker....why not?

I think this will be my 17th. (Abbie Hoffman said "If you remember the '60's you weren't part of it.)

First year I did a lot of research available at the time and brought strong shade structure, strong tent, shower, relax chairs, bikes, tools and used everything. Came in the car below, which I've posted here before, but I still love that car and was awarded the "Oldest car at BM" in '98 by a group who went everywhere looking as they thought their '57 Chevy Nomad was the oldest.

From then on, brought more and more stuff in an Econline van, 4 toolchests of tools, enough to lend out simple 3lb rebar hammers or deep sockets in metric or inch, extra rebar, pipes to bend rebar into candy cane, bike stand, bike tubes, big ladder, tools, lots of gallons of water for showers gifted. It became a thing. Was more than once called a god for gifting a shower.

Never lost a loaned tool, either.

As time went on, all neighbors had everything needed to do infrastructure, shower, and repair bikes.
There was one year when no one asked "...do you have a ____ I could borrow" and I never saw neighbors struggling because they didn't have the right tool for the job.

I think because of threads like this (OK, thread drift like this) that many newbies come prepared as if they had done THITD for years.

Starting a few years ago, I take less and less each year.

A dream goal is to come in a car the same size as the '40 Chevy some year in the future and not be attached to a theme camp.

This will be number five for me and six for grai.

I definitely went a bit nuts my second year. More art, more infrastructure. I kidnapped a virgin who was looking for another camp, put a drink in her hand, shoved her on the Cloud car and told her that this was for the best.

Every year we play the simplify game. Every year we lose. We're a real camp with events this year. Terrifying.

This will be my fifth year...I am bringing in a virgin. I have a pack list refreshed every year that varies between individual important items to vague categories of stuff to bring, it is all thrown into bins until one is full, then move to the next. We are now doing Bin-by-Labelled-Bin Inventories with Quantities of Things and Sorted by Function of Said Things.

AHA! I've tracked down the source of that information I was given last year. It was not an official Burning Man communication. I narrowed it down to the person who injected their own rhetoric into the EA instructions and let them know.

eh. technically, Placers do include language like the following in their pre-arrival newsletters:

Build Week -
Be respectful. Remember that everyone is working hard to build the city. So, Please:
No late night partying
No loud music after dark.

But what kind of person bitches about people having drinks and fun? Ugh.
Anyhow, I don't think most virgins fret much over folks having fun while building. You're quite the special snowflake!

I work my ass off during early arrival so yes, I party my ass off as well. I'm not going to apologize or worry about what anyone else is doing.

I'm sure that person was thrilled to hear from you about it. Now they can revise their EA instructions for future years to emphasize flexibility, open-mindedness, adaptation to changing circumstances, and new camp members being prepared to follow the examples of veterans.

So...good job?

So Sparr -- after all this, inquisitive minds want to know: will you be arriving early and, if so, are you going to party?
Make it, enjoy it, let it go.
