The 2005 Theme Is Announced!!! "Psyche: ..."

Post by MoisturePup » Fri Dec 03, 2004 9:06 pm

The 2005 Art Theme has been announced, and it's fantastic:

Burning Man's 2005 Art Theme will be "Psyche: the Conscious, the Subconscious and the Unconscious." Our theme explores psychology: self-expression, self-reflection and the unconscious power of dreams. More to come.

I'm not sure how to feel about the theme, maybe I'll just take a few Xanax and my Prozac and wash it down with a liter of malt liquor.

Is it secretly April 1st and someone forgot to change the calendar?

I like it it is so broad and encompasses so much it could almost be a non-theme for some or could be seen as specific by others.

Zule

Don't get me wrong I think it quite an interesting theme with a huge potential for art, theme camps and costumes, I think I was just stunned that they announced the Theme and Ticket sales so early for 2005, I come back from being gone all day and the parade started without me.

I am still taking the Xanax dammit, where'd I put my purse...

Now there's a way to get nice and drunk quickly.

But the psyche... That could be interesting. That is definitely a more broad concept and could be covered in so many different ways. It makes me very excited for the next Burning Man. If only for the morbid curiousity of how they plan on covering the psyche in art alone.

BTW, I tried to post to your website, and it demanded that I register... okay... so I didn't... still... hang in there, girl...

congrats to the llc and everyone involved for getting the theme out there early enough that people can actually make use of it. that, combined with the reduced coercion to follow the theme is a good step forward, i think.

Thanks Sam.

I'm sure you'll be able to at some point.

But, I personally find it interesting. There are so many different ways that Psyche can be viewed and interpreted... It's kinda like Vault of Heaven. Heaven has two meanings. However the individual takes it is fine. I just can't wait to see the art.

Reminds me of an old Alice Cooper album (but then again, all Alice Cooper albums are old, aren't they?) where the theme of the album is that he is in a mental institution. "Nurse Rosetta, I wont let her, catch me peering, down her sweata ..."

Damn, I had that album on vinyl but tossed it before I moved to California. Oh, yeah ...

the 'psyche' pedestal

Post by P-Mobius » Fri Dec 10, 2004 9:12 am

does this mean that the pedestal for the man will be shaped like one giant brain with all sorts of squishy crawl passages shaped like cerebral lobes?

or perhaps more appropriately, the man will stand on its own psychiatric-ward, complete with holding pens, racks of labcoats, straightjackets, and the latest in pharmecutical samples...?

You will have to navagate a maze to even reach the man.

And there will be multiple "cheese" art cars.

Fineman

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Wed Dec 15, 2004 8:31 pm

In one of his books, Physicist Richard Fineman wrote about a period in his life when he rushed home daily to experiment with sleeping. He was fascinated by what his brain did and kept trying to catch himself and be awake and dreaming deeply at the same time. He made little progress, as you may have guessed. Still, that's the place I want to go to this year.

Now that he has passed on, I wonder if he's got it figured out.

If the ticket order form's art is anything to go by, the Man will be perched on a...Circus Tent???

And golly, does Dave Best look righteous in a Dorothy Gale outfit, complete with Ruby Slippers! :)

Pedestal-schmedestal!
The conscious, unconscious, and deep sub-conscious can be represented by a tunnel. Stand in the sunlight just outside the tunnel, and you are conscious. Step back into the tunnel a little and you are in unconscious territory. Go way back into the dark to find your deep sub-conscious mind--very hard to contact, and for damn good reasons. There lies your probably negative (knowing burners) self-image, formed eons ago in your early childhood.
So forget the pedestal. This year let's put the man inside and at the back of a gigantic tunnel. Or stick him on top of the damn thing, if you want, who gives a shit, as long a the fucker burns!

Blessings, love, and light

Kilroy

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Sat Dec 18, 2004 8:45 pm

I'm toying with doing a skeletile frame of a "Kilroy" head on top of the Time Tractor. Mostly el wire and LED's for eyes darting in all directions as the conscious mind tends to want to do. It would be hard to top Mr. Fixit's Big Giant Head:

Image

I can't say the man's art does not inspire me! He's gonna steal the theme this year!

Anybody got some backround info in Kilroy during WWII?

Let's explore the unconscious part of the theme and start a Roofy Bar. Or better yet, a Russian Roofy Bar. Feelin lucky?
