JRS - Has it lost steam?
JRS - Has it lost steam?
Anyone else feel a bit of a letdown when reading the JRS?
Back when Andi and Will did the wordsmithery there was exciting original content in them pages. Cool things for cool cats.
Now it's just an aggregator for the Journal, stuff I already read.
Seems lazy to me.

Re: JRS - Has it lost steam?
I agree. lots of articles, like reading a conglomerate newspaper. Similar to back in the day, our local county newspaper was highly entertaining, news of the weird and off the main road stuff, personal, people you knew. It was bought out by a big news/publisher. Hardly worth the buck they charge for it now. Haven't bought one in years. I don't read the JRS anymore either.

This last one was a tad dry. I saved it to read in the middle of the night to help lull me back to sleep.
Prior to this one, they have not been too bad. A lot of relative information and links to other articles. It's also a good reminder of things that we should be doing--such as registering for tickets etc.

I figure that if you feel the JRS is boring, you should do something in our community worthy of making it interesting

Yes. I barely care when it comes anymore. It's as if it's written for someone else.

Re: JRS - Has it lost steam?
Love the do-ocracy sentiments but it doesn’t apply to the JRS. It was always a vehicle for the BORG to get good info out to the masses. Has to be official.
My point was that it got watered down to a blog-rag rather than a tool to educate, reinforce messages, spread the word on important stuff.
Things like BED, JOTS etiquette, LNT, Stewardship etc. got lost in the glam of the Smithsonian and pleasing the Google overlords with campus art.
We are slowly losing collective knowledge for the sake of slick image and trendy formats.

Hey I've got a [tiny] piece in the Renwick exhibit and I'm really honored by the whole thing.Token wrote:Things like BED, JOTS etiquette, LNT, Stewardship etc. got lost in the glam of the Smithsonian and pleasing the Google overlords with campus art.
My wife left me right before I made that piece, in many respects due to the madness that had become my version of Burning Man.
The fact that it made its way to the Smithsonian is a symbol for me that I'm not just the asshole that she left. I'm the asshole that she left, plus the creative soul that made that piece, and I'm trying very hard to be that better guy.

Well chit on me for picking the Smithsonian for my example. Still the point remains.torrey.smith wrote:Hey I've got a [tiny] piece in the Renwick exhibit and I'm really honored by the whole thing.Token wrote:Things like BED, JOTS etiquette, LNT, Stewardship etc. got lost in the glam of the Smithsonian and pleasing the Google overlords with campus art.

Re: JRS - Has it lost steam?
Well, the thing about the commissions from the google folks is that it is a way to actually support these artists that give so much to us on the playa.
The time and money they expend is significant.
I'm glad that some one (some group) with funds wants to use some of that to support the artists.
I don't see that as a bad thing at all.

Re: JRS - Has it lost steam?
and Token hits the nail on the head.
I glance at JRS & move on, I used to read the whole thing. I'd call it milquetoast, but that implies something more exciting than the current JRS.
