what do you call the world outside the playa?

Postby Guest » Mon Sep 08, 2003 9:33 pm

there seem to be a zillion metaphors/terms for the world that we come back to after leaving the playa. the "default world" is one i've heard. what do you call it, and why?

Usually just "the real world". Although a cute, dusty punker playing the slots at our hotel in Reno did spy me and hubby and said "Welcome back to the Matrix, guys." I thought that was good.

Oregon Country Fair people call that which is not part of it The Unfair.

I can't think of anything nearly as good for not Burning Man though.

How about, "love purgatory".

When you get out, you get your love back.

Matrix is on the right tip.

As is "fake world".

Or "unfortunate reality".

Once again, make this place "reality" by changing the things about it that aren't like the "real world" of BRC.

What I call the place I'm at that's not BRC.

Well, if I'm home in San Francisco, I say I'm in San Francisco. If I'm somewhere else, like New York, I say I'm in New York. It's kind of like how I say I'm in Black Rock City when I'm in Black Rock City.

My friends Lora and Gordy call it Camp Reality.

Seems to me that there's all kinds of fodder there for describing the everyday world in terms of theme camp values. "Sure, it's interactive, but they expect every last damn visitor to work his/her ass off on some ridiculous project or another, without even the decency of a free tequila shot or gratuitous grope when it's done! What's up with that?"

How about "Earning Man", as in... the rest of the year I spend working for "the Man" to pay for my next Burning Man trip.

Or even "Yearning Man".

I'll stop before I go too far with this one...

Babylon. Got it from my '99 campmate A7N7G7E7L7, he said it with so much passion and awed contempt. It just kind of stuck. The long version is "Babylon the Gweat and Tewwible" which is about how I feel when I get back to it.

I'm guessing A7 called it that because Babylon is said to be the first great city-state on the face of the planet and the rest of the world seems to be in a mad rush to follow in its footsteps, for good or for ill. That year A7 wound up moving to some hamlet in the middle of Alaska where wolves killed a moose in his back yard.

i feel there is an angel in me whom i am constantly shocking

Actually, I refer to it as the 'default wrold.'

But that's nothing original on my part.

The real world has it's perks. I can't build furniture or mill metal on the playa. And I can party more at home than I can on the playa. In fact, if I set my mind to it, there's not a thing I can't have here that I can have on the playa, other than watch nekkid hippie girls stroll by by the dozens.

Here's one I just came across:

Comforts Of Home Camp

I think you use this one to make you feel better when you don't go to Burning Man, and then start having second thoughts around Wednesday evening.

Camp Reality or Camp Fuckedup, or Disillusion Camp...depends on the mood, time of day, tidal position, number of Clear Channel repeats for the day, and other misc crap.

That so describes it lately.
