Not my Bike flagpole

Post by Desert Wind » Thu Oct 23, 2003 10:14 pm

how bout a giant flag pole on the open playa for people to deposit bikes that
that dont belong to them...and of course if you happened to misplace your bike, you could look
at the Not my Bike Flagpole to see if somebody acidently left tit here for you

another idea ...is 'The Finsih Line!'

a giant Finish Line set up on the open playa, complete with cheereres and refreshments

Just playing devils advocate, "would this increase bike thefts? Leading would be joyriders to feel better about themselves taking your bike because they know that there is a specific place for you to look for it afterwards?"

Just wondering out loud, I think it's a good idea though. Maybe not on the open playa, maybe somewhere else though.

It would also give would-be bike theives a place to go and pick up a bike. Wander out to the appointed spot, find the nicest bike you can, ride back to camp. Repeat.

A good solution for the thief pickup problem might be to pre-register bikes and owners. Let people ride out to the flagpole while they still have their bike, and put a tag on it with a number. Give the owner a receipt with the same number. If/when a bike comes in that's got a tag, give it out to only the person with the receipt.

Better yet, get rid of the receipt altogether and just record the owner's name in a log book. The thief would have to know who owned a tagged bike in order to claim it.

This would work best if the greeters could make people aware of the registration process when they come in the gate.

Better better yet, go back to the receipt idea and post someone from the bike camp at the greeters' stop. Offer to tag the bikes right as they come through the gate and give the owner the receipt to keep in their car (where they won't lose it or create MOOP)
