(dis)information camp?

Post by Dork » Mon Feb 23, 2004 10:44 am

My idea is to set up a fake information stand on some random intersection. Create a map that has all of the main features as the official one plus several more that we make up. Nothing would be in the correct place. When people ask for directions, we give them obviously fake ones. Thunderdome? Yeah, go to the next intersection and wait for the #4 bus. Take it 5 stops, get off right after the McDonalds.

It would be filled with gawdy souvenirs for sale. The worst stuff imaginable. If anyone tries to actually buy something, they're told that item is sold out but more are expected the next day.

Everyone who visits gets incorrect and irresponsible advice, all given with a straight face.

Who's with me? :)

You could also put those directional signs pointing in all directions. (wrong of course). Maybe you should make it a mobile cart... and change your location daily/hourly/whatever.....

I think you've been hanging out with the Cheshire cat!

It's been done for the last few years. It's known as Playa Info and there's some unknown person who's been giving really good, really bad directions to clueless folks after the real one closes.

If you're set on doing this I might have just the thing for you.

Us newbies already think we're out of our minds.

How lost can you really get out there anyhooo....?

Personally - I'll probably keep a map on me at all times... just in case I run into one of y'all out there trying to f*** me up..

I did the esplanade souvenir shop last year and got some pretty irate folks bitching about the no vending rule. Some folks just have no sense of humor.

I should have known someone must have done it already. Do you have any pictures? Were they irate in an amusing way or an afraid for your life way?

I agree...when I got to the playa last year (my first round) I was so disoriented (sp?) I KNEW I had to keep a map on me at all times. Granted, there were times I was not quite able to follow a map...so I used common sense and 'stuck close to home' until I was ready to venture out again. I guess 'messing with 'greenies' ' might be kinda fun...after all we are not in a real world out there.

If any newbies were truly lost and couldn't find their way home, I would of course help them get back. I'm more interested in keeping people from heading directly to the items on the official must-see lists and ignoring the rest, and in pissing off overly sensitive vets.

I assume that posts begin closer to August about theme camp/art projects, and that people have a relatively close idea of where they will be. No?

Like - I'll be searching for Mom's garden, but I'm sure she'll let us know before hand where to bring the insects....... or ...... ????? And I'll make sure to make notes of who I'm going to stalk... kidding ... no, really, I am.

Map of the star’s camps

Map of the star’s camps

So – every year rumors abound about what “famous” person has been spotted at the porta potties, or center camp or where ever. Howza ‘bout a map of the “stars” camp? You can continue the subterfuge with having each one different, or directing to random people’s camps, or whatever. Have fun directing folks to random spots.

just a thought!

The best possible denouncement I can imagine to this scenario is 2 years later running into someone at one of those camps that a hapless innocent was directed to who then got to play a "star." That would be a playa gift return extrordinaire.

Intentional Bump: For some people this was a problem last year. Playa Info is not staffed 24x7 so beware of advice given late at night. What looks legit might not be.
