I want to bring/build a structure at an angle for a Soap Box Derby type of race where two or more light race cars sit at the top (Vault of Heaven) and then let gravity do its job as the riders race downhill . Have you seen this type of idea done before? By who? what year? who successful was it?
I need advice, suggestions as to the structural design, type of materials (wood, plywood , metal beams?), quantities, etc.
Also, do you know who made the 1999 "WoodPussy' Burial in Space launching pad"? Looks as if they used metal beams. I wonder how heavy they are. It could get costly to trransport a heavy load. I wonder what is the lightest metal rod that could be used while still enduring the load above it. http://images.burningman.com/index.cgi? ... og=strengg I'd like to find out what their experience was.
Thanks a lot!

skateboard ramps
Doing a search for building skateboard ramps is the best. A curved/elliptical ramp gives you more speed, but its harder to build due to drawing the plywood down to its curve. Although, it would also give you the ability to build a smaller one, part of your race can then be across the playa so you would not be building the whole course. And this way you can have a speed race as well as a distance one.
I helped build one so it's not difficult if you have some experience cutting wood. Its mostly 2"x 4"'s, plywood sheets, and a bunch of nails. You could construct it at the playa if you have the extra couple of days (just one if you have the help), power tools, and a generator. You can also burn it when your done.
This link has diagrams, plus lists of materials and dimentions.

Re: skateboard ramps
You dont need power tools and generator if you precut everything at home before you bring it. Just hammer and nails.
