Need advice on using LEDs in costume.

Post by PlayaMikey » Wed Jul 14, 2004 12:17 am

I have a costume that I want to light up with LEDs for Burning Man. I have found some web pages that show how to wire the LEDs, but I'm having trouble finding specific instructions for incorporating or sewinthem onto a costume. Any advice out there? Thanks.

I would have a small piece of copperstrip circuit board (one brand is called veroboard - see http://images.google.com/images?q=veroboard for some example pictures). Push the two wires of the LED through your costume material, and on the other side of the material place the board, poking the LED wires through that too, then (holding it all closely/tightly together) solder the wires to the circuit board. That should keep it in place. Then run the wires as needed between the circuit boards, and the controlling circuit/batteries. If you can add a lining to the costume, it'll help you not get wires caught/ripped out as you put in on.

Have fun!

You can also imbed the LEDs in a little blob of GOOP adhesive or silicon, with the leads poking through the material to the wiring, which can also be encased in GOOP. It bonds well with just about any fabric, and remains flexible. Takes paint well, too. Just don't forget and chuck it in the washer!
