Music Mixes from 2015 (soundcloud only)

Post by muloka » Wed Sep 23, 2015 9:51 pm

Hey,

I've done my best to scour soundcloud for everyone's dj / live music mixes from this year and have assembled them here for everyone listening:

https://soundcloud.com/muloka/sets/burning-man-2015

So far I've found 188 and am regularly adding more as people post them and I find them.

Cheers,

Muloka

Holy smokes. THANK YOU for doing this.

Love it, I started to listen last night as I fell asleep.

Had wonderful playa dreams as I started to recognize some of the sets. ♡

My pleasure and aren't playa dreams wonderful?

I didn't even go this year and I still get them at least once a month or more.

Up to 191 now. :D

"live music"...... I'm gonna be listening to this hoping to hear "live music", like the Contra Dance camp with their strings and vocals, or the guy with a guitar out at the temple, maybe find my campmates performance on the piano.......

....cause if this is just recording of recordings.........

I've moved this over to "2015 Stories" since it's a better fit.

I love hearing non-electronic music on the playa, it is often refreshing (and I love electronic music in normal life).

Also, my friend did a live set of electronic music on playa. He makes live techno/electronic music. I believe he uses mobile, modular synths and soft-synths. It's not the same as DJing, Djing uses pre-recorded music that is then played and beatmatched/beatmixed. He was creating the music using electronic "instruments" and looping, etc.

Thanks for doing this, Muloka! I'm finding some that I was definitely present for and had good times dancing to. I'm all for the spontaneity of coming across awesome music by accident, but also I wish there was a way that lineups could be released earlier without people buying tickets based on that information. I buy my ticket in February and know I'm going to the burn regardless of who is performing, but I would love being able to look up DJs I'm not familiar with in advance. I keep coming across ones that I REALLY wish I had seen, but I didn't know who they were until it was too late. The Rockstar Librarian came out the day I left for BRC, so there was no time to ask my friends who have similar tastes, or look up DJs online. I guess now I know some others to look out for next year...

Our camp at the 4:30 Portal had live music for the first time this year. We had a very weird and interesting mix, including a French couple playing chapman stick and improvised jazz vocals, a female freestyle rapper/accordion player, a rock/electronic performance with a guy live looping vocals and effects he triggered with buttons on his custom-built guitar and microphone, some old style Americana....nicely eclectic. We had a really positive response, I think a lot of people get tired of dudes dancing around behind laptops and crave real voices and instruments.

Was this That One Guy?

I'm not being a turd, that's the name of the guy that comes to mind.

I saw That One Guy and his Magic Pipe at Earthdance in 2008 or 2009. My friend and I stumbled upon his performance at a small, intimate "stage" one night (more like a shade structure with amps in it) and couldn't figure out how to dance and laugh our asses off at the same time. His lyrics were funny, and his bass was deep and funky.

Hi Muloka,

Thanks very much for compiling this. I wonder if you or another on this thread can help me find the set I heard and would love to re-listen to. It was Tuesday night (I think), around 11ish pm (plus/minus), on Esplanade, near-ish 3 o'clock. There was a jazz/Mardi Gras-style band, about 15 musicians, dressed in white suits. Just before ending their set, they came down off the stage, walked into the playa, then returned, while playing "This Little Light Of Mine". And everybody snapped their fingers, stomped their feet, and sang "I'm gonna let it shine". It was a beautiful moment for me, and I wish I knew which band gave me that gift.

Thanks much,
Blue
