After Santacon sells out, new owner in NYC indicted for fraud

Santacon was a Cacophony Society project founded by Rob Schmitt, John Law and Chris Radcliffe in 1994 in SF. One of the first Burning Man Camps was Santa Camp in 1990.

Eventually Santacon in some cities was taken over by nonprofits and even for-profits as a business.

John Law always favored a more self-managed culture and people not enriching themselves.

I saw that headline, that's unfortunate. I've also noticed that in a lot of cities that do some version of Santa Con, a whole cottage industry of grifters have popped up. In Las Vegas, we do two (one in mid December, and then one in summer) and both are free events that do not require a ticket... but in the last couple years local members of the community have spotted people selling tickets on eventbrite or other sites. No idea how successful the grifters have been, as I have not yet actually run into anyone at one of these events who says they purchased a ticket...
