True, and for the most part the MVs are wonderful about giving people lifts. The problem is that the destination isn't always where you want to go.

Part of the musing that started this thread was due to an experience on playa this year where my friend injured his foot far away from camp. He managed to limp halfway back, but his foot was really hurting and he couldn't go any farther. We decided to hop on an art car, but it was too crowded and noisy to get to the driver and ask where he was headed... and he ended up taking us back to where we'd started from :(

That, coupled with the Public Transit hearsay, made me wonder whether some semi-reliable system could really be a benefit to Black Rock's citizens who are unable to walk or bike long distances.

I'll give you a ride on my mutant any time there is space and if your or anyone's companion is injured the Space Yacht will take you where you want to go.
Taking people to their destination is part of the goal with my mutant vehicle.

So lo and behold, someone's actually doing it! http://nowhereomnibus.wordpress.com/ :D

Looking at the proposed route, planned art performances, and LNT elements, it looks like they are doing this right and I think it's a fabulous idea!

I have my doubts about the ability to adhere to strict schedule out on the Playa, but I think most of us are familiar enough with the concept of Playa Time (if even carrying a timepiece) to forgive the occasional missed stop. After all, as stated earlier in this thread, most of us are perfectly able to walk or bike if we don't feel like waiting at a bus stop. And I think this will be a valuable service for those who have challenges with traveling long distances. The theatre element of the experience will certainly be a treat for anyone who cares to participate!

Have you encountered a lot of issues relating to accessibility on the Playa?
I'd think, lots of folks would be glad to lend a hand........At least it seems that way.

It's not much of a priority of the llc. There were many people who helped me out of drifts last year. I still have issues with needing the help, so the more there is "adaptive equipment" built into on-playa experiences, the less resentful of the whole damn mess I'll feel, the less unwelcome, the less of a burden, the more a member of the community.

Riding an art car, while fun, has never been as satisfying as biking or walking around the playa for me. The city is only a couple miles wide. Get over it and get some exercise.*

*(exceptions made** to the prior statement for those of legit limited mobility. Fishy, if I could build you a flame-shooting, solar powered, four wheel drive mutant chair, I would. Still working on the automated ass-kicker.)

**(more exceptions made for le contraption. Still my favorite art vehicle.)

I'd have to agree with you here ygmir. Personally, I don't want to presume that somebody would need or want my help, but, I would be more then happy to help where and when I can.

It's a really long shot but I'm just throwing this out there.

What if we have a public transit system that is run by the residents of Black Rock City? What I have in mind is a 'people-hauler' towed by bicycles. I haven't really put much thought into how the actual design will be but five bicyclists would be able to haul a descent amount of people, I think?

There can be instructions on what to do attached to each bicycle, and there will be 'x' number of them out on the playa. If people want to use it to get across town, they have try to get a group going along with volunteers or volunteer themselves.

But even though I ride my bicycle instead of my car I have no idea how much weight five adults can tow. I know there are safety factors to consider along with actually designing(and funding of) this contraption, but I like to call it public transportation, Burning man style.

All this talk of transport, and what people can do for others, and the simple answer is "you want it, build it."

Fishy, I know your background, and I know your resourcefulness. A flamethrowing wheelchair would be sweet.

As far as the rest of you asking for better mobility, better transport, better attitude from Mv's, .....

You want it, you build it. This is burning man. This is a do-ocracy. This is radical self-reliance.

The borg provides a simple canvas, sometimes with a little of their own poo wiped on it, but overall a blank canvas. Nothing more. Oh, and ice and poopers. Do it. Make it. Bring it.
The handbasket to hell is leaving. Hop in world!

A plow would be great for clearing unnecessary hippies out of the way also.

bigbluedoggy wrote:If they should decide to implement some sort of mass transit, I imagine it would be done in phases. Next year could potentially see an Esplanade shuttle, which just makes the circuit from 2:00 to 10:00 and back across to 2:00 via the Man. If that works out, then maybe there would be an outer or mid ring service added for future years. Given how crappy the playa surface was this year, I would have been more likely to go further and see more of the city if I had known there was guaranteed transportation from one side to the other and I didn't have to rely on having a bike (and a sore butt) or walking the full distance. I don't really think its a bad idea... and who's to say that whatever form of transit vehicle is created won't be pretty trippy looking? Official art bus anyone?
I would have to agree.... It would have been really nice to have something like this last year. I must have walked back & forth across playa at least 4 times since i was camped at 9th & C. Bikes or good shoes equipped.... that was beyond a life changing journey! Holey Moley!!

Don't know if they've started building their bus yet or not, but I found this on Reno's C/L.
(disclaimer; I am not at all connected with this bus, just found it while looking around and thought it might be of some help to this project.)

I have a pass for the Cap Cod Tunnel for quick trips to Provincetown? Anyone know if there will be free passes to the BRC Subway System?
