Re: legalities
Absolutely true! What happens if someone walks across a scene you want to photograph? Do you have to get their permission? It's a coutesy , not a requirement.Having this language in a section titled "... MEDIA ..." undercuts its applicability for people who are not members of the media. Most of Burning Man is art. If this rule applied to everyone at the event, hardly anything could be photographed. If "must ask permission" applied to people taking pictures for memories (& friends & families), as to public art displays, participants would need to find Larry Harvey for permission to take a picture of The Man.
People have the right to photograph objects or people of interest.
This is the way it goes in default reality. Society imposes rules upon its members to maintain an air of civility. For women , they must dress in modest attire. For men , if they cat call, oogle, or otherwise banter ,they are charged with sexual harassment and punished /fined severly. Now , if we at Burning Man decide we want to shed these restrictions, that women can shed their garmentation, then in all fairness you must lift the restrictions on mens' reactions to such display.
Think of it this way. If men are prohibited from photographing things of interest then ,say you went to Chippendales to photo performers and performances there, you should be banned as well. If men should tolerate actions not to their approval then so should you. That is the undisclosed admission cost to Burning Man.
Hey , we can make it so no women get oogled. All we have to do is make Burning Man an Amish event.

Women being naked = men's license to act like a dumb ass?Taz wrote:This is the way it goes in default reality. Society imposes rules upon its members to maintain an air of civility. It's what you make it.

Re: legalities
Have you seen women at a Chippendales performance? Why is it so different for them?Women being naked = men's license to act like a dumb ass?
By the way, did you take any pictures of things or people of interest while you were there?

You are absolutely correct! We see things differently because we are taught to see things differently. Take an attractive woman who walks down an average street naked in broad daylight. She might get cited for obstruction of traffic but little more. Now take a man that walks naked in the street publicly. He would be hauled in for indecent exposure and booked on suspicion or every sex crime currently on the books. We see things differently because we are taught to see things differently.mars wrote:I love what you did RebA cuz you saw a problem and found a personal and creative solution. It was brilliant!
And I want to add to this thread a teeny weeny bit of understanding about these guys since, as women (I'm female), it is really hard for us to understand why they act so idiotically around naked breasts. And what, I think, we don't understand is how much men LOVE our breasts. I think, especially if we are hetero) we can't really relate to that or really get how much or why they love our breasts so much. And since we often (I know I do) have feelings of shame associated with our breasts, we tend to (unconsciously) project that shame onto them and feel like they are acting shamefully. Their actions make us feel icky, when that's not what their meaning to do at all.
I don't know if I'm being articulate here...it's a complicated reaction we have. Unless men have been specifically educated about how women feel about their behavior, they often think their actions are COMPLIMENTARY, rather than disgusting. It's amazing how different men and women can perceive things at times.
Guys, am I right at all about this? I'm really into understanding these types of differences between men and women, so I'd like to hear from you if I've got this right at all.
Yes, I think men and women should be taught to behave with better manners. In this incidence , I don't think it should have come to anyone as a surprise. But if you're gonna make a rule you have to carry it evenly across the board. I'm against censorship and that carries a price with it.
All people do not think alike. There are some women who eat up this behavior and endorse it. We'd all like attention from those we solicit to and deplore unwanted attention from those we don't seek.
These guys aren't really doing anything that abnormal. Your boyfriend probably started out the same way only you accepted his approach as opposed to the others. You made the difference , not them. To the rest, they probably were all contenders for your affections as well only they didn't fall into your favor.
So I don't really know why you would be so surprised by the response. I think people should have a little more consideration in these cases. So when it happens , just be assertive of your position and be ready to turn away the mob politely. Being that you are the judge, the referee, the chooser, be ready to defend your verdict to be as fair as possible to all.
