I known the perfect thing for you, I know someone who couldn't for the life of 'em ride a bike. Everyone tried to teach her and failed miserably, until someone showed her the perfect technique for learning how to ride a bike. Here's how it goes:
Find the steepest hill you know.
Get your bike and try to ride up the hill, not down, up.
Basically there is enough stress on it that you should successfully manage to stay up right, and you'll naturally disallow yourself from rolling backwards. It sounds stupid, but it works. After you've ridden about two meters up an incredibly steep hill, you'll be able to ride on flat surface easily.
Let us know how you do on your marvelous journey that is bike riding.
