First time burner as well...

Post by FIXl » Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:10 pm

I just didn't get it. I had a few brief moments that were interesting, but I was bored most of the time...had a hard time dealing with the elevation, dust, and heat...when I did feel good my boyfriend wanted to sit and watch people walk by, instead of running around.
I wanted to walk, instead of bike, but that was nearly impossible. It just seemed like everytime I felt comfortable, he got bored or vise versa.
There was no schedual, so we couldnt find the bands we wanted to see...
I wanted to go to the waffle house, and every day I went, for three days, it was closed or done serving...or out of food?? I did have a few moments, like I said, but really otherwise, it sucked for me...I was hoping for community, for an experiance of inclusion, and the freedom to roam and feel the world around me. Guess some people arent cut out to go to the playa. Now how am I supposed to be happy for my boyfriend when he wants to go next year, and I want him to go on vacation with his family instead. It creates resentment. Im not posting to bitch, I just want to feel good about BM, and right now everytime I see anything to do with it, I feel like why? why? why?

It's hard for me to tell:

are you posting in the wrong thread?

are you thinking someone here will clarify this for you?

are you posting on the wrong board?

Or,
am I dreaming?..........

Impressive thread drift there.

If I had to match someone else's schedule the whole time, I would lose my mind.
That alone would ruin the trip.

Lot of luck involved in what happens when.
Just keep going.

I hated going to the event with my husband. He was working the event as an EMT, that was his gift to the community and his way of burning. He tried to include me in that, but it wasn't easy for me and I felt pressured. And when I tried to do something else, it was another source of tension, because when he was off shift, he needed? wanted? me too badly to just let me noodle around in my own way.
And I had the heat, altitude issues as well.
My advice, go on vacation with his family, and let him go to the playa. Or find a crafting retreat. Or go to the shore. Or Daytona Speed Week. Where ever your little heart desires. The world is your oyster, and burningman is not the only pearl.

First year my playa-bride-to-be and I arrived we couldn't find our camp, wandered around confused, when we noticed a small pile of paper money blowing in the road as passerbys walked and rolled right through it. Wondering if I was being the height of uncool in a no cash scene, finally said fuck it and picked up maybe about $40. Nobody seemed the slightest bit interested in it.
Was born late and falling ever further behind, will soon be in the lead.

You'll know you're really acclimated when you see money blowing down the road and don't think "Hey! Money!" but rather "Uh-oh! MOOP!"

Feeling out of place, and talking about matter out of place: It's not too far to drift metaphorically. It's not for everybody. I think we are all in agreement and gratitude about that. I look at some regional pictures with a grassy environment, (CfM thanks) and wonder what a clean burning man would be like. Luxurious it seems.

Next year, I am going to moop more. Sounds like a good way to interact with others while doing something worthwhile. I have been looking for a picture of the cartoon trash collector guy who would scoop up the broken statues (?) on the Jay Ward cartoon that had Sherman and Mr. Peabody, or was it the cartoon with the dad and son Greeks??. Is this a false memory? tall narrow can with spoked wheels, white outfit, billed cap, big moustache? I've looked at some Jay Ward sites, and will move onto seeing if I can find a video clip. I think it was a recognizeable, even iconic? type of trash collector, perhaps I can find some archival photographs.

I've seen bills out there and thought trash first.
A lot of people walked by them.
It seems like I may have put something on them to keep them from blowing away.
I figured whoever lost them had a better chance of finding them in place.

It didn't occur to me that it might have been someone's plant.
Is ygmir up to more games out there?

By the way, with all the theft out there, it's reassuring to know that cash does get turned into lost and found out there.
Seen that happen.

(I used to work in bank vaults sometimes climbing on large stacks of money.
It's harder than you might think, but fairly comfortable.
Most people think it would be fun, but it's just paper when it's not yours.
But you could make a comfortable chair out of it.fyi)

Image street sweeper... yeah that's what I meant. I like the cart. easy to make a stick with the nail on the end. and maybe one of those flip open dustpans witha long handle, made out ofscreen perhaps. no use collecting a bunch of dust. The other way to go would be the roadside community service look.

Thanks Gyre. Wow my memory of that was sure different. Funny. The little guy with a big broom is the one. I googled street sweeper images and got more of a rock duo, a thompson like machine shot gun, and of course large vehicles with brushes, than I did of an actual person dressed as I remembered.

Here is a scene from Mainstreet Disneyland, July 1955 : that I image googled.

http://www.matterhorn1959.com/blog1/img211a.jpg

The person from D.S.D., Disney Sanitation Department is named Trinidad, who followed the horse driven trolley.

I seem to recall the Hanna Barbera cartoon streetsweeper following the final credits not only after Mr. Peabody, but also after Huckleberry Hound, and possibly after Jellystone Bear and BooBoo Bear. The Pink Panther also had a streetsweeper character that was very similar.

Mr. Peabody was Jay Ward, not Hanna Barbera. So, I don't know if you're remembering something else, or just grafting two memories together.

Jay ward, got it. Yeah, all those cartoons run together in my mind, Deputy Dog, Babalouie, Hagii. We used to sneak out of Cubscout meetings and watch my friends tv.

Yeah, and Tennessee Tuxedo just wore a bowtie. Do you think we could track these things in a "trends analysis"?

The topic drift was not intentional...it says in the bottom corner, experiances at burning man. So I was posting mine. I am trying to understand my hostile reaction to all things burningman, and comming to terms with the fact that while my partner had an amazing life changing experience, I hated it.
Thats ok though, he can go next year, and that will give me just enough time to pack up and move out...I dont think burningman should displace the core family.
The "default" world as he calls it, is where we live. Its where we are everyday. Its a good place. Sure we work, and have stressors, but we are together.
For him to think it is ok to leave us for a week, and not make plans or be excited about us going on a trip as a family (we cannot afford both vacations) well that just shows the kind of man he really is I suppose.
So everyone can go back to thier painted rainbows of escapeism and talk about how picking up trash is so great...but ask your selves. Do you pick up trash in the "default" world as well? If not, then why not?

As far as the cartoons wearing only minimal clothing...well in my opinon, it's so we can identify them as male with out drawing a penis on them. Which they would have to have in order to be shirt cockers! 8)

That blows, and I can totally emphathize with your situation. BM obviously means alot to your partner as should the family he leaves at home for that week. Finding some sort of middle ground seems like the best course of action, only you know if thats possible.

FIX1; Sorry you had such a negative experience. Decompression after burning man and returning to our regular lives can be difficult on relationships. Possibly it would be wise to leave the discussion about next summer's vacation for a little while til you've both gotten back in touch with your lives and your relationship.

May I suggest that a regional event might be a good compromise. Its usually cheaper and its not in as hostile an environment - think of grass camping. Yet the regionals often have the same kind of mix of art and human exchanges. I enjoy the regionals because they are closer geographically and with smaller groups of people. You get a chance to connect over a weekend event at a smaller price tag instead of committing to the big show.

You might be able to do a regional in the spring and a family trip later in the summer.

I hope you'll consider the possibility of compromise for both your sakes.

And yup, I do pick up trash in the real world. In fact, its one of the reasons I enjoy Burning Man so much - I met other people quite like me who care about the world too.

Two members of our camp, FUA, smoke, including me, so I take one of those old fashioned copper trash cigarette butt holders with a lid that pops open, on a handle, then after a few days empty it in the trash. Cigarette butts are the first thing to blow away in a wind storm so they must be covered up.

We had a couple camping behind us this year who kept everyone up at night with the goings on in their tent, sounded like a couple of cats in heat in there. Anyway, they left and I was mooping on Monday before we left and they had thrown used condoms out of their tent right onto the playa, I almost had a seizure when I saw it. It was the rudest, crudest thing I have EVER seen anybody do out there. I just couldn't pick them up, I felt bad about it, but I have my limits, and that was WAY beyond what I could do. They should NEVER come back.....

Too bad you didn't spot the condoms before, you could have tossed them back into their tent for them.

I've found lots of fun things in my five years.

Two years ago i found a camelback in a porto at about five in the morning. Somebody apparantly took it out to expel some waste (or ingest some waste) and forgot about it when they left

I have found baggies of little white powders four or five times, but i've never had the guts to go ingesting it. So i give them to one of my more adventrous friends out there with the caveat: "i have no idea what this is, have fun" and he generally has (except the once it was just shitty shitty cut stomped baking soda-y coke)

My favorite playa coat was a piece of moop, it's big and white and i believe its made out of shag carpet.

of the innumerable smaller trinkets i generally let my gf decide if she wants them, otherwise they get sent to moop heaven.

oh, and lots and lots of cigarette butts and glowsticks (wanna make art out of glowsticks, still working out the idea.)
