Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
I don't know. The word technically means "unmarried" so you could be screwing every woman and half the men in your--congregation is not the right word, but it's the one I'm finding in my brain--and technically still be celibate if you weren't married. Obviously, the word has changed meaning in any practical sense. And whatever words they use in Greek and Russian, it's a sure bet that those words have different histories and nuances.
I think I know that to be a Patriarch you have to be celibate. Maybe I should look at wikipedia and learn a little more about the orthodox church.

Reverend Billy's "performances" are pretty damn near church services, in the best sense. And he's married a few couples on the playa, too. My first year out there (2007), I caught his act out by the temple. He was doing his schtick and the line that got the biggest applause was, "...and Jesus Christ, a fellow Burner..." I actually got chills from that because he's exactly right.
I'd love to see a full-blown Catholic mass out there, they've been putting on the best shows for millennia.

And then there's the castrati.
And the little boys...
And they have the nerve to say that they are experts in human rights and dignity.

sigh ... the usual ....
it drives me crazy, how people love surface salaciousness ..... even the brilliant ones, if it serves their purpose.
I hear there IS a catholic camp, and would love to hear more. please PM me if you know something, and do NOT post where the haters will find it ... they are so damn good at snark (to my reluctant delight.

Maybe in another two and a half years someone will respond to your request.

As a "cultural Catholic" since both sides of my family are/I grew up in it/I am no longer Catholic and I'd consider myself spiritual/Buddhist/Yoga practices at this point...I think the answer to your question lies in what people already responded with an addition.
to be a Catholic Mass, it HAS to occur inside of a Catholic Church. Catholic Churches are not temporary structures...so, this feat is impossible in BRC's current form.

Never say never....
I have attended many a Catholic mass on the battlefield where the priest used a 55 gal. drum, the hood of a jeep or a stack of ammunition boxes as the alter and these we were located a long-long way from a sanctified church.

All one would need would be: One priest and one hung over possible convert.
Well, you would not even need the hung over possible convert; just a priest and a dusty piece of outdoor art to serve as the alter, some homemade wine and a piece of yesterdays pizza crust.

Meat Hunter is correct, all you need is the priest. Everything else is optional.Catholic Exchange wrote:In general, the Church’s assumption is that while Mass should be celebrated in the most reverent environment possible, it is often better to celebrate it in a less ideal place than not to celebrate it at all.
[snip]
A missionary priest might travel hundreds of miles to a remote village, where he celebrates the liturgy in the back of his pickup truck, if no better option is available! Along similar lines, Masses must necessarily be offered in makeshift places in those areas where the Church is being persecuted (think communist China) or is simply forbidden to exist (like Saudi Arabia).
(No, I'm not a Catholic, but I study theology as a hobby and am wicked good with the googlebox. The website referenced above has links to the relevant sections of Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church)

I visited the twistine chapel last year and they built a confession box a couple of years ago but some of the confessions were too twisted and they freaked out the "priest".....
Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
I don't know about a Mass on the rest of the playa but I'm pretty sure that Kidsville has a No Priest policy because of the male children.

if you are able to find a Mass, you'll not be able to tell where it is. and if you find it, there will be no mass.

I've actually been looking around for years, but have yet to find any such camp. I did find a single Christian camp, but they were only evangelists trying to convert the heathens and as such couldn't provide any services for actual Christians. We also had a priest in camp once, but he just spent the week running around naked and was entirely "off duty" for the event.

Re: Has there ever been a Catholic Mass on the playa?
Sorry for reviving a long dead thread but... well, I just saw it. SO, YES, there was. In 2008 at some unknown spot around 11:00 and fuck-all. It was jointly presided by a Jesuit priest and a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Probably the most beautiful mass I've ever been to. There were maybe two dozen of us who stumbled upon this.

I don't know about mass, but if a Catholic priest showed up he'd be busy all week just hearing confessions.
