Not trying to be a jerk about the whole dj thing, either. It's a sensitive subject to most of us, though. A lot of people think that there's nothing to it but it takes talent to do it right and make it sound good. It really is an art.
Disagreement is a natural consequence of living in a world where people are different in their perceptios.

I see it more as a craft.

No 'jerkiness' assumed on your part Sam. My general disdain for those who crowd under the umbrella of DJ or tattoo themselves with the rubric of 'artist' or 'musician' is that most of them are convinced that the basic component of their craft namely, other's music, is somehow completely and magically of their own making after a few session tweaks and therefore original to the nth degree. Never mind that the morphed version of 'Walk This Way' lifted by Run-DMC is a hit predicated on the original work of another musician. In my view many DJs fit the same arrogant mold. Often their adoring fans conspire to buttress the idea as if saying it enough times makes it so.

I don't think it does.

The DJ schtick is very much like that it seems. Where they generally see themselves as original, I see them as someone who has taken a a pair of scissors and have pasted together a collage . On some levels it is original, pleasing and oft entertaining. The assemblages of El Lissitzky being a case in point. But suggesting that such pastings are contemporaneous with Matisse or Picasso in terms of style, scale and sheer genius is stretching the thread just a bit too taut for my personal tastes. I tend to poo-poo such praise with a helthy dose of skepticism. I think Oakenfold is a fine example of someone built more on hype and media than by talent and originality. I'll cede he's a craftsman albeit an over-paid one but artist? Nah. Not even.

BTW, 47 yo.

Ok maybe i am no artist but when i read the crowd and start dropping those tracks on themat the right time. Weather it's just one loop on an obscure record that i have spent hours sometimes months looking for. When i drop it on the crowd and you can see that response that shit feels good. So am i an artist i don't really care can i please people with my skills. Hell yeah. I hosted an electronic radio show in las vegas for about 6 years. When i did my final show i recieved e-mails from teenagers and adults telling me how I inspired them and how my soundtrack was a big part of theyre lives and memory's. That's what it's all about. The music and the experiences.
So even though i am just rambling. I may not be an artist to some but to some my mixes are what it's all about. Lmao
P.S. nekt year i will be dressed as the trancenator and will be destroying all trance record's and Trance dj's. Thank goodness for the space cowboy's and them hard ass desert break's.

There was something in the events list about him possibly performing this year. I had planned on attending, but was distracted by something (probably a shiny bauble or a brightly colored ball) and didn't end up trekking out to wherever it was supposed to be.

I have seen him play live two times-- in both cases I was unimpressed. Last time at 1015 Folesom he showed up over an hour late, actually left in the middle of a set for about 15 minutes twice(so much for "live") and, despite a good bit of drunken showmanship, made no serious attempt to look like he was mixing at any point. It was actually rather insulting.

His live performances notwithstanding, I do think the man is extraordinary at what he does do-- which, as stated earlier in this thread, is produce music in a studio. Its unfortunate many DJ's think so little of studio producing-- it is a seperate but related art form to live music. I think the closest parallell is impromptu theater acting verses movie acting. Both are valid and worthy of respect. The problem arises when someone tries (and fails) to cross over but doesn't have the good sense to not repeat the mistake. He's not a "smoking turd" IMHO-- he's just hasn't had a reality check forced on him about his live abilities (or he doesn't care-- people keep paying to watch him.)

Just my 2 cents

* Fat SAM posting under Rachel's login *

While I would never compare myself with Matisse or Picasso, I think it might be fair to compare myself to Warhol, because what he did was overrated, too.

It goes back to the thing that I was arguing back and forth with the Piss Clear chick...art is subjective - just because I don't like it or I'm not impressed doesn't mean it's not art. Or it may not be, but who's to say? Anyone specialize in aesthetic philosophy? Would you call photography art? It can be done artfully but I think I would hesitate to call it art. One can photograph art, as in the case of someone photographing something they arranged to look just so, but that's really just attempting to recreate the place where that art could be seen in person.

Regardless, I understand your point and have argued with myself about it on a number of occasions. What am I as a dj? Am I a musician (I play the bass and violin as well as turntables, but I mean only as a dj) Am I just an entertainer, like some lounge act? I compare myself to Warhol and make a joke, but seriously, when I see a Warhol I think "anyone could do that." The same is true of dj'ing as long as one has the patience to learn it and love enough for the music to obsess about it, because that's what it really comes down to.

Most dj's are obsessive nerds who spend hours in dark basements or in their bedrooms or living rooms, counting on their fingers or in their heads, learning every beat and accent on every record in their collections. We're dorks, through and through and that goes for every dj from the biggest superstar to the lowliest newb. Band nerds.

That's why I'm getting into production. Heh. Then I can be cool.

* still Fat SAM *

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand....if you want to hear a MASTER of dj'ing; one who truly elevates it to art, pick up a FatBoy Slim mix. He produces live as he mixes tracks on cd and vinyl. He IS an artist and I won't be backed down on that one.

Oakenfold played on the Playa 2 years in a row...both with Illuminaughty.

'2000 was hardcore dancing in the rain with 8" Playaheels.

I doubt he played this year even though a close friend of mine said that he saw Oakenfold sometime Thursday night at a camp beyond 10 o'clock. From what he said, the camp was only there for the night while Oakey played and the next day it was gone.

Shit, there was so many amazing dj's this year...i missed not seeing Dina on the Playa though.

I don't give a fuc if oakenfold played or not but that big sound installation story is true i was camped at 930 and jupiter. I watched them build a massive silver and gray sound installation very big and very tech. They started on wed-thursday. On fri me and my sidekick dj shoe went to investigate. They said all dj ing was handled. When they say that and they have there trance hats on i am out.Anyways cruised by fri -sat night nothing happening. On sun they tore it down . Weird shit.
