1) Adding Muslin to the vented areas of your tent can do a lot to minimize the dustiness of your tent.I'veBeenHad wrote: Being it was my first burn, I was mentally unprepared for the dust. I mean the dust was everywhere within 5 minutes of arrival. I tried in vain to protect things from the dust at first (e.g. our tent) and soon I learned resistance is futile. I was just not ready to surrender my self to what I considered filth but soon enough I relented and just went with the flow!
The heat in the early morning kept me from getting enough rest. I mean even 3 or 4 hours straight. Next year I am definitely bringing battery operated fans for some ventilation.
2) Building a swamp cooler can make the daytime hours more manageable.
3) Reading the survival guide and joining the forums before attending the event can teach you to do these things so that you are adequately prepared to have a good time.
4) The dust is your friend. Love it or leave it. There's nothing filthy about it, more like a dry mud bath.

Great first post.I'veBeenHad wrote:It was my first burn so it was a little overwhelming to say the least!
Best
*Walking out on to the playa for the first time at night. I mean just looking out onto the horizon is simply breathtaking.
*Visiting the temple. I was on the verge of tears and I was completely sober, for the record!
*Pier II Pirate Ship. I mean OMG what a trippy experience at night. The stimulated ocean and the long walkway really set the fucking mood. I will not forget that experience for a long time.
*Exploring, exploring, and more exploring! I cannot believe how many different things there are to experience. I was blown away.
* Carrots vs. Rabbits protest. This is probably the most absurd thing I saw all week and I loved it!
* For the most part, the people were amazing, friendly, welcoming, and hilarious. I was surprised at how inviting everyone was. The trip reinforced my faith in humanity.

Some on here were praising the dust storm on Friday but for me it was a bit too much. At first it was cool biking around and seeing stuff come into view and slowly disappear into the "abyss" but that got old after a couple of hours and finally I just called it a night. They are not kidding when they say the playa can be a very hostile/unforgiving environment.
I just wanna close saying that next year I will participate more in the "community". I did not fully understand what BM was until I arrived as such it was hard for me to put much thought/effort into maximizing my contribution. Now I realize how important it is to give something back so I will definitely be more involved in creating a better BM in the future.
p.s. Playa dust might be the cleanest, most corrosive filth you'll ever love.

best: this thread
also, Pyro Podium. that shit was AMAZING. first night out there i go exploring solo and stumble upon what looks like a simple arrangement of posts, decorated with LEDs all up and down, but what made me curious was the orange caution fence around it.
so anyways, all the posts are actually flamethrowers hooked up to this central propane tank and the way it works is that it syncs up to a persons movement via xbox kinect, who is standing up on a large podium, hence the name, Pyro Podium. so when you move/dance/seizure, you control the flamethrowers! so freakin awesome.

(no that isn't me in the photo, thats on their FB page)

Seriously, scrubbing the sunscreen off is part of my daily ritual, but I don't expect to remain dust free for more than a few seconds. Hell, I probably have a pic around here of at least a half inch of dust in my sleeping bag.
Once you accept it - the dust is comforting.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

I totally didn't get to play with it. Some asshat named 'bon chichi' stole my turn. I got there first, waited for the team to get it firing correctly and then a few people started gathering around it, we all started bullshitting and drinking from our flasks and before you know it, they're saying only one person can be on the podium at once and of course dude wanted to play more than I did so I let him.
I did get gifted some coffee liqueur though

Fuck that though.
If I realized one thing about myself at the Burn this year it's that I am too friggin' nice.
I go out of my way to ensure everyone else's happiness yet rarely look out for my own.
It bit me in the ass hard this year and I think I finally learned my lesson.
