Pitchforks seem a mite Frankensteinesque. May I suggest our art community doing some nice murals on their otherwise artless fiberglass fences? Perhaps a simple gift of a table with some spray paints and a sign saying please help beautify us!

I got an email from placement saying so many camps had requested the 7:30 area & asked for people to voluntarily ask to be placed elsewhere.

We were tossing people out of our private area when they just wanted to wander in/walk through, etc. I worry about thieves mostly, but also think it's just kinda rude to think anyone wants to just wander through the living area. We have had all of our hitachis stolen.

I can't help but just laugh at the hypocrisy and radical self-importance displayed throughout most of this thread. The folks behind Burning Man and on the board of directors are making a killing off of every single burner and yet nobody seems to have a problem with any of that. But as soon as some "rich folks" come in with a plug and play camp, all hell breaks loose.

They profit millions, and each year they jack up ticket prices and find new streams of revenue ($150 scarves, car passes, etc). They are bullies who will do anything to protect their corporate brand but most burners worship them and their 10 commandments and bow down to the flaming corporate logo/idol every year without a care in the world or even a thought of the symbolism.

They capitalize the profits and socialize the costs on the backs of hard working volunteers. Artists take on all of the risk, liability, insurance etc. with very little help from BMorg who then owns EVERYTHING. They choose who gets special preference and who doesn't based on nothing but a popularity contest which wreaks of ego and special interest. Free labor doesn't seem to bother the same people who bitch and complain about minimum wage laws and Walmart not paying their employees a "living wage".

I'm not a huge fan of the plug and play camps but hell, AT LEAST THEY PAY THEIR WORKERS, unlike the BMorg who profits off of free labor while burners cry about exploitation in China and call Sherpas who signed up for the event "slaves". Give me a break. Slaves don't have a choice. Slaves don't earn wages. Slaves don't have the freedom to leave. I don't like the plug and play concept either, but for crying out loud, why is nobody pointing the finger at the fat cats doing the same and worse that are sitting at the top of all of this?

Let's get real, this is big business. Just take a look at the people on the board and where they come from. We are talking about execs at large corporations. If you have a problem with rich plug and play camps, fine. But please check your hypocrisy at the gate and stop giving a pass to the BMorg.

Burn, have a good time. Enjoy yourself and bring your positive energy to the playa. Respect the principles but don't take them so damn seriously like they were written by Jesus Christ himself. If plug and play bothers you, ignore it. If it bothers you THAT much that you CAN'T ignore it ... then you really should start with the BMorg, they are the ultimate rich corporation here. The entire burner community will be much better off when we all wake up and realize that these people DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT ANY OF US.

Nice rant!!! I really enjoy such outbursts. It's very healthy imo. However I'd like to point out just a couple of things. Within this thread and others on the subject I think some folk have mentioned the fact that the "folks behind Burning Man" have become fat cats from Burning Man. So lets not assume that nobody else shares your insight there. Also, I know a guy personally who comes in to work as an electrician for the set up and he does get paid for his work along with a ticket and a great camp to be part of. So there's that too. For the rest it's a labor of love. I hope to volunteer this year and I know it's going to be gifted to the Man but not just Larry and the BOD will benefit. I hope to benefit everyone including myself. Just to make sure this all doesn't go down as black and white here.

I agree with a lot of what you say however. Maybe most of it. The first thing I noticed on reading the profiles of the BOD is that they were all very successful business people. There was plenty of red fags (oops typo that's "red flags") for me seeing how they were making those bucks in the world. And what was glaringly absent was a little guy or three to represent that level of the economic spectrum. The BOD I belonged to had an employee position on the Board to insure there was a voice for the guy on the ground so to speak. That's how I got on the BOD. I was that guy. I was able to exert some influence there. Yeah, I'm concerned there are only wealthy people on the BM BOD. I really don't know what can be done about that or if anything should.

Not everyone is concerned about the "rich" getting their P&Ps but rather how it's done and if they are actually theme camps and getting theme camp privileges are they actually being theme camps along with other possibly valid concerns.

I appreciate your input. I' think that if this and other discussions are heard by those running the show it may give them pause to evaluate the role P&Ps are playing and if that if there are abuses there they should be fixed and made right. That's the most one can hope for I think and that would make this bru ha ha of value to future Burns.
