I saw it, I saw the bird (not the finger) It looked like a small crow or starling...only saw it once.

migration?

Post by Rah-Rah » Tue Oct 19, 2004 6:41 am

I've read through this thread and, after reading all of these accounts, have to wonder if maybe these birds are migratory and a few have come to recognize BRC as a place to stop and forage on the leftovers of humans, maybe even just a shady spot to rest in a rather shadeless, foodless desert. It wouldn't be the first time that animals have acted so (but I think seagulls really invented the french fry). Maybe if the numbers increase in the coming years it could be proof of this theory. I suppose they wouldn't even have to be migratory, indiginous maybe. Anybody know about the local and/or migratory birds in the area that could shed some light on this possibility? Birdbrain?

There was some talk about the various birds IN THE CONSERVATION AREA in the Environmental Impact Statement. I'm not going to drag out my copy and look it up in the near future and they don't seem to have it posted on the web anymore. I only remember the avocet off hand. You could direct your inquiries to the Buerueu of Land Mangement and/or the Fish and Wildlife Department.

I think the birds for 04 were different from other years. This was the first year with flying bugs. A swollow did a few circles around my camp in the evening picking up bugs. Then a dragon-fly stop about a foot from my head. Bout that time the sketter he was looking for bit me in the back. Dragon-flys are good people they eat lots of sketters. There were quiet a few this year. There is stagnant waters around the playa. Great hunting for the dragon-fly

Yeah, the huge bats and manta rays are definitely indigenous to the minds of some migratory playa visitors.
I saw a a winged bug (solid black) and one bee (yellow-jacket) while I was there and some sort of falcon or swift. It was moving fast and I didn't take my binocs so am unsure of what I saw. Wing formation was definitely falconoid, though...
I'm sure sea gulls did invent french fries now that you mention it.....

Chirp?

Post by Maxx » Mon Dec 13, 2004 11:12 pm

On Monday morning there was a man standing at 8:30 and Esplanade yelling "Chirp? Chirp! CHI-IRRP!!" at the top of his lungs, but I don't think he was really a bird...

I saw a bird too.

Post by gatt » Sun Jan 09, 2005 10:10 pm

On Saturday I saw a seagull fly across the sunlight over our camp.
It struck me as odd:

We had a fly stowed away in our van, until we arrived and made camp at which time it escaped. As there seemed to be no other insect organism anywhere to be seen, we issued an alert: FLY ON THE LOOSE!

Not to worry, our friend from Snuggletown said, for they had discovered a spider in their trailer and had shooed him out onto the playa. The spider, we presumed, certainly ate the fly, and we issued an updated alert: SPIDER ON THE LOOSE!

Then came the bird, prompting the cancelling of alert for fly and spider. Upon sounded the air raid siren for a sufficient amount of time, and seeing nothing resembling a cat, we concluded the matter and resumed to our vices.

Then you swallowed a dog to catch the cat, huh?

swallowin' the dog.

Post by gatt » Mon Jan 10, 2005 12:10 pm

We didn't see the cat, but I did see one Rottweiller in the hands of a Ranger. I believe he was one of the perimeter patrols which is why he had the dog.

As a rule, I avoid swallowing rottweillers; I suspect I'd find them disagreeble. Plus, I can't remember what I'm supposed to swallow to catch the dog.

It has to be accessible on the web, not just on your local machine.

Sparrow hawk (kestrel), a small falcon, probably. Check ID & mapped range here:

Packing up camp on Tuesday I saw three grayish brown sparrow kind of birds. There were quite a few moths and even one bee during the week. The poor little things had such a hard time with the dust- and WE think it's bad enough!
