Do not sign release forms

Post by vic » Sat Mar 04, 2006 6:00 pm

Several members of my camp went to the wedding that ended up in the Disvovery Channel piece. Now they are wondering if they attended a sincere wedding or a media funded "theatrical event" designed to make a reality TV show interesting to watch.
What I love about Burning Man is that we do what we do for our own reasons, just for the fun of it, and not because someone is paying us to do it. I spend the rest of the year surrounded with commercial culture, and I am sick of it. For one week a year I can get together with others from my tribe and we can experience each other's art. When I start wondering if I am seeing a participant's self-expression or a commercial event produced to sell products on TV, I will find something else to do in the last week of August.
I will not be signing any release forms at Burning Man this year.

By their own admission, the Discovery piece was not intended to be a news piece, etc. DaBomb should be compensated, period.

What I'm not happy with is they were supposed to interview one of my campmates, and didn't. Coulda been me, I don't care who, but they avoided the whole Leave No Trace ethic. I'm sure that getting an earful on LNT Principles, and all the things that BM does for the local community doesn't really make exciting TV, but the opportunity to do the right thing was there and they passed it up in favor of sensationalism.

Oh, HI BOMB!!!!

I like pudding.

I like tea.

I like chocolate.

Do you like me?

Something I sure won't be showing my mom!!!

As for the commercialism and hipe about the documentary I though it was done well. Media man only showed what was necassary minus my penis. He could of made it out to be a totall red neck party that would of attracted even more tourists to taint our perfect little community.

ps my little blurb about not needing drugs, white lies....

Okay....On a recent commercial for the program "Survivorman", I swear that he's wearing a Burning Man bandanna...(Yellow, with red Man print.)

And has anyone encountered the fire-spinner chick from Survivor? I'd be SHOCKED to find out she WASN'T a burner.....and more typical a burner than our old friend Jerri, if you ask me.

I have to admit- I kinda enjoy watching "Survivorman"...We take bets on when he's going to bitch about his "heavy camera gear".
