Is Burning Man cool?

Post by uncle sticky » Thu May 25, 2006 9:42 pm

:?:
I had someone ask this question, and it took a moment. So, I pose the question to ya'll. Is Burning Man cool?

My take is: No, it's the antithesis of cool. It is not detached, uninterested, or emotionally calm. It is not interested in appearances, or passive aggressive behavior. It is not too fast to live, or self-destructive. It is the opposite of cool.

What d'ya think?

Cool, as in hip? Ha! I think it probably jumped the shark a couple years before I first showed up in '00.
Not to say that I don't have a good time or anything.

If you have to think about it then it isnt cool, it's something else.

"I'm too busy to be terminally cool."

Oh, good gods no. I've got way too much going on, and yet I'm doing more this year than ever. I think many of us are just dorky as all get out. That's why the projects end up being so amazing.

Nothing else going on???? I wish! Burning Man is my vacation, my relaxation, my escape from too much going on!

Is it cool? It gets pretty dang hot out there; but nights can be cool.

Events aren't cool; only the people who attend.

As compare to what? Some lonely, no-life fucktard skulking over to this board under the pretense of grieving for a dead friend in order to generally stir shit up.

Man, it's gotta suck to be you.

It'd have been one thing had you stayed over in the original thread where you made your first posts but you've stepped over a boundary Norcal.

You're fair game now. Asshat.

This is a free board right?

Post by Norcal500 » Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:40 am

You don't have to GO to BM to post in this forum, they haven't made that a rule yet and this is the topic, is Burning Man cool?

Which means it is fair game for anyone to write in any topic and especially one that is whether or not it is cool.

Be very afraid? Oh my god I am laughing now, we are supposed to be afraid of Burning Man people? Come on, isn't the whole point of this festival to foster love and a higher consciousness or something like that? Sure, all kinds probably come but be afraid?

I'll be afraid driving through Hunters Point at dark, meeting face to face with someone out to rob me with a gun, driving around in the Bay Area with all these people mindlessly racing about..

But afraid on a messageboard? COME ON, let people voice their opinions. Free speech is an American right, just because you don't want to hear it doesn't mean it isn't their constitutional right to speak it. If it pushes your buttons, well too bad. George Bush pushes my buttons every day he puts money into that damn war instead of his own people, but that doesn't mean I am going to get all riled up everytime he says something, I just ignore it. If you don't believe in the words someone is posting I sincerely hope you have something better to do than get all angry about it. This is a messageboard. Come on. Let people post whatever they want to, if you think this should be some private board then make it so. Until than ANYONE can post.

THIS POST WAS WRITTEN BY MY WIFE (memoryofkathy) not norcal500 it just showed up under my name but her point is spot on.

Just because anyone can post doesn't mean they necessarily should.

In any event I offer you my condolences for the massive online asskicking you are about to receive. Don't whine...you opened the gates of hell all on your own. You were warned....

I'm just sitting here watching for the inevitable Badger / Iso response which is what I was referring to. I'm not getting involved in this unless he comes after me specifically.

You know Norcal reminds me a little of our old friend Rex! only he can spell.

I think people who piss into the wind repeatedly must enjoy getting themselves wet & smelling bad! I'm really starting to like this guy, maybe we could get him & Rex together, they could go out to the Black rock and shake their fist at 35,000+ burners & mesure sand serpents together.
Rex could spend hours telling him all about how he's done so much to close down burning man, humm.. let's see how many years has he been shaking his fist? how much progress has he made?

Ah, welcome aboard Norcal! Oh by the way you still haven't responded to how your wife came by that BM ticket she sold Kathy?

Now is BM cool Ya! full of people that take responsibility for them selves!

Just a thought people. Everyone take a giant step back and read the Community Guidelines, m'kay? What positive contribution is being made to the eplaya community? Very little IMHO. And I'm not just talking to one person, free speech or not, there's some serious lack of judgement going on here. Give it a rest folks, we all have better things to do.

There, now I've gone and done it. How much was just anti m and how much was me as a mod? Don't know, but this is a close as I get to pissed off. Sigh.
ePlaya Community Guidelines
These guidelines were developed based on community input and best practices from existing bbs'. It is the goal of these guidelines to help foster a strong, supportive community.

Philosophy
The ePlaya exists to support the Burning Man community.
In order to do so, it must support the interests of ongoing ePlaya community members who may have a variety of interest that they bring to this forum that may be only peripheral to the actual Burning Man event. This also includes those Burning Man community members who only briefly interact online, and those who are joining the community and wish to gain an understanding of it.
Everyone is capable of contributing positively to the community, and a variety of viewpoints are both expected and encouraged.

Funny how the other post got locked. I guess people are getting scared about thier event getting shut down. Guess this is a not so public forum now.

So that should answer your question as to why she ended up with a ticket.

So where are your fearless leaders now ???? They must have gotten scared and run off.

as for the talk of guidline violations on this board. go ahead and censor what you feel you need to. must I remind you of freedom of speech. I've said all I need to. at this point its just toying with the jokers that keep feeding the fire.

The thing is that it is SOOOOO easy to push all you people's buttons. All I have to do is bag on your event and your get all bent out of shape. All you people have is your dumb event to live for. Gee I wish I started burning man so I can sit over here in san francisco while you people try and discover yourself out in the desert and make me RICH because all you suckers buying tickets for over $200. Go ahead and make the organizers rich.

Ok now some idiot is going to post a bunch of remarks about how all the money goes into the event and they have all the facts to back it up and blah, blah, blah. Get real !! all you people are a herd of sheep. Following the one infront of you. Way to be original people !!!!!!

and funny that you decided to post rather than reply to private messages.

it was no-one elses decision to lock that topic, just mine, and any decision by someone given authority to act is also compltetely open to discussion - there is no abuse. there was no 'post' that got locked and you certainly are still left with the freedom to post in the HOPE that you can return yourself to some semblance of rationality. freedom of speach is a reality here - more so than just about any other place on this strange form of internet based communications that you have chosen to launch your personal agenda. and its also unfortunate that on one hand you cry foul of censorship, and on the other are hypocritical of people who make comments. you have to allow one with the other no matter what is said.

no, I respect others comments. I actually encourage it if it is a valid statement no matter if I agree with it or not. I just don't like when a valid debate is turned into a name calling fest just because someone does not agree with what another says. Then the rest gang up on the opposition.

I can leave it alone now. I know I said that before but I will end it now. I have raised my points and given you all enough to chew on for a while.....

well, the problem i have with that - the name calling and other such behavior seems to be on both sides - you certainly had your share of it. i am not defending others reactions and comments because i think a lot of it was uncalled for, and i even contributed by posting in that topic myself. but you can see the burden this places in making sure people have the freedom of expression that you refer to.

so i hope others points 'give you enough to chew on for a while' in turn.

Hippies?
Sort of.
I know a lot of people who go to Rainbow Gatherings.
I can't get any of them to go to burning man because they think it's too commercial.

Burners are sort of like rainbow people with military capability.

A Japanese friend says if you put ten Japanese in a room they will take over a small country.
If you put ten Chinese in a room, they will throw a party.

If you put ten burners in a room, they will definitely throw a party.
But they might just take over a small country at the same time, as an afterthought.

Now if you'll watch my machinegun for me, I have to go put twinkley things on a bike.

definately more anarchistic and prone to conflicts than your average hippy.

i dont like locking topics, that goes against a self-moderating community. i hope to unlock it after people have a chance to calm, reflect, and compose themselves. there are some hurt feelings and its obviously more sensitive to what many thought, including myself.
