Aerial gallery of BRC 2005 -- help identify some streets

Post by bradtem » Tue Jul 18, 2006 2:33 am

Last year I took a plane flight and tried to photograph most of BRC fairly close up. (I also did this to a lesser extent in 2004.) Took a while to put my results up.

You can find them as the last 4 galleries at http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/, divided into sections on the left and right of the city in two passes. I've identified the locations of most of the photos but there are a few I don't have references for. So if you take a look at these photos -- there are 200 of them -- and you can identify the location of one of the ones marked as unknown or with a question mark, let me know following the instructions on the pages.
(Please do not use ePlaya private mail, I rarely read that.)

(My regular photo galleries are also there.)

As before, I had to shoot through the window of the aircraft. Someday I hope to find a willing pilot with a window that can open and I can make these a lot sharper.

Indeed, I had a long lens, and while they are not always clear because of the plane window, and the prohibition on directly overflying the city, often I got down to the level where you could identify people if you knew them. He'res a shot of a random camp at 8:00 and Gestalt at full res. The web site is at 1/4 res.

Note, if you identify your camp (and thus the streets and landmarks around it) you can also post here to let me know the image filename and a description of the things in it.

Well, I found Recycling, Piss Clear & BRC Hardware:

http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm ... G_5079.jpg

On 6:00, in that order on the right side heading away from Center Camp.
Recycling is the domes, Piss Clear is the side-ways RV with the janky little tent out front, BRC Hardware is the Big Beige tent partially out of frame.

I would love to see the full size image of that one, but I wouldn't suggest posting it on the board.

Brad, these are some of the best aerials I've seen of the city. I love them!

Hey!!! You got Miniman on the front page! Thanks!!!!! (Gotta let Jelly know!).

Also found our Kamp (Apokiliptika) in the 3:00 Plaza one... just above center.

http://pic.templetons.com/cgi-bin/imget ... G_5172.jpg

Look for the "8 ball", if you follow that side of the 3:00 keyhole to just across Amnesia, we're between the street and the schoolbus, to the red P/U (next to the brown VW) to the left.

I can (kinda) pick out the Kernul's TMV and Iconoclast's VW, can pick out Jelly's trailer, the Isabella, my P/U (and tent). Of course, the Kantina stands out like it well should!! >giggles<

If you ever decide to split pix off and send 'em, I'd love one of that one!

Oh, lessee... Fringe Camp is to the left of the 8 ball... Verboten is across from us. Kewl!
Thanks,\bb

be really nice to paint the domes, from the ground it would only have limited aesthetics but from the air... entierly different story.

ref BBSue's post:

to right across water track and slightly below 8Ball is panty camp, then bicycle repair, next around plaza (3 long shade tents) is Hokey-Pokey. then left is EspressoCamp (silver dome). Left from EspressoCamp is Ranger Outpost Berlin.

Like BBSue, would like to get a copy of the hi-res image.

excellent pix, thanks for sharing! :D

While it's always interesting to know what camps are what, I am probably not going to put camp labels on each picture, there are dozens of camps in most of the pics. I am most interested in info on the pictures where I don't have the address, or am unsure, or have it wrong.

One thing that might be interesting would be if you knew a neighbourhood really well, to take a picture in photoshop and write (artfully) the street names and camp names onto it. I could put those up on another page. Is there a wiki that lets people annotate on photos they way people do on flickr?

I will also put up some full res prints on my photo wall this year, which hopefully will be on the esplanade as it normally has been (except last year when it got relegated to the back-streets on 7:30) I do also make prints at a modest price (with BMorg's permission) though mostly people want the panoramics.

Or do something big and bright and stand outish. That's how I found our camp on a few others - we were down from Inner Pig with it's bright pink pigs head. You can see that a mile off!

Thought of something like that. The Bar Camp's star tent should be really visible. (Aren't they near us this year - maybe adjacent to Terminal City (our quaint little village of doom this year...)? I seem to remember hearing something about that...)

The best thing, tho, is seeing the pix and feeling... you know... HOME! Like seeing the pool in your back yard on a satellite image. ANd it makes me not wait until next year.

observingly yours,
bb

The picture titled 'Big Camo' is Gigsville. Just above the camo is Hushville. You can see Anti-Em's Home for wayward art and Phil's camp. I really don't remember our address.

Photos can now be annotated with camp names!

Post by bradtem » Fri Jul 21, 2006 11:19 pm

Big news. I found some software that lets people annotate the photos (similar to Flickr) with rectangles and text. You can mark camp names, or label the major intersection in a photo if I haven't already well described it.

Play nice -- and it's not working super well in Firefox/Mozilla right now for re-edits and views, but it should be a lot of fun.

Mark out your camp at http://pic.templetons.com/brad/photo/bm05/

PS, now no need to email me with coordiantes. Just annoatate them and email me the URL of the photo which has incorrect coordinates.
