Friday evening explosion

Post by Schwa » Sat Sep 09, 2006 8:03 pm

Does anyone have pics or video ( preferably pics) of the big explosion from about 8pm friday? I found a crappy video on YouTube that shows it from ground level but not the mushroom cloud. I'm sure video cannot capture for me the moment that blast appeared in front of us as we made our way toward the crowd, but i'd love to see some images of that fireball.
ever grateful
much love

I'd like to see that too - I was one of the perimiter Rangers and would love some video of the BLEVE.

I don't have a video, but it was AWESOME! I have never seen that much power released that quickly that close to me. I tried to take a picture, but the camera seemed to shut down in some sort of panic due to the energy. The batteries weren't low or anything either.

Uh, well, gee... This is so freakin' embarrassing... I apologize if I startled anyone. Look, it was 'Chile Rellenos Night' at Camp FYB at 2 o'clock and I knew darn well those things give me the gas, but I partook with abandon anyway. I was drunk, okay? Anyhoo, I think it was just after I'd finished my rellenos and a particularly large plate of refrieds when I let one rip that lifted the dome a good six inches. Unfortunately, I was also holding a lit cigarette at the time, hence the fireball.

Like I said, I'm sorry if I scared anyone. BTW - I like my new 'shaved' look but I kind of miss having eyebrows.

Dude, when that thing went off, I was a little scared. It was huge! I kept feeling my hair because it really felt like it had melted it was so hot down there. I don't think any actually had their hair melt, but it sure felt like it. I heard a lot of people saying "OH MY GOD!" I wonder how many hundred gallons of fuel they went through in those seconds.

Thanks DBlock, but that's the crappy version that i mention in my first post.. it doesn't at all capture the fireball in the air until it's almost gone...
there's gotta be some better shots...

Each one of the pods used approx 300 gallons of fuel. There will be some better video coming soon. The crew has some excellent footage. The name of the project was 2BLEVE. You can pronounce it 2 believe or 2 BLEVE. (Boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion) First class design work.

I was as close as they allowed anyone to be to that scene, and that video does not do it justice. That thing was wickedly powerful and bright. In the video, the camera is having trouble with the exposure which makes it hard to see.

Scroll a little down on my web page, there are three pictures I took in the front row:

One of my campmates took this picture from a bit behind:

We were in the front row and when the flame cloud was overhead it was really quite scary! Mrs Beltane ran away......Awesome, and the film doesnt do it justice at all.

Two guys standing next to me each with two types of cames got what undoubtedly are the best shots I've seen. One had a pro-rig Nikon digital shooting 8? frames a second caught the entire sequence from a wide angle and the other caught video of the fireballs as they ignited and rose into the air. Both caught the scene from an elevated position so that the crowd is only in each frame enough to give a perspective of the size.

I sort of stared at it like a deer looking into the headligths of an oncoming semi. For a second I actually considered that maybe something had gone wrong and that the fire was going to kill us all.
