Using other people's art

Post by robbidobbs » Thu Sep 28, 2006 8:31 am

I'm annoyed about something that happened this year.
I saw several people play-acting the Star Wars art, specifically the Jedi Knight characters. This is George Lucas' art, and it seemed simply tacky to be copy-catting, rather than making up one's own art. Now I'm seeing someone wanting to put together a Fremen group, which is Frank Herbert's art.

Come on people. Can't you think up your own art?

All art is derived art.

Yeah, I kind of understand, finding the Imagine instillation that's been on playa the past two or so years similarly annoying. OTOH, weather or not I like it, doesn't really matter, eh?

A troubling lot of "let's 'do' a movie" camps this year.

Making costumes can be an art.

Bringing something to life that you've read about can be an art.

I sculpt, and make masks, prosthetics and do makeup. Sometimes I make the things that roam in my head, sometimes I bring things to life that I've read about.

Once I was privileged to show an author how I'd brought one of his creations to life. He was moved to tears. He was delighted.

It was, possibly, one of my best moments as an artist.

Art is what art is.

Doesn't answer it

Sure, we all draw from our environment. But that doesn't mean we can't tell the difference between dressing up as Obiwan and something more new than old.

The people who are actively into SF and Fantasy costuming certainly do. In their competitions, they have categories for "recreations" and original work, though a costume that visualizes for the first time a character only described in words is not generally a recreation. Anyway, point is they don't have much trouble distinguishing.

You can do whatever art you want at Burning Man. But the art at burning man has always impressed me for not being very derivative. So I definitely stand with those encouraging people to be as original as they can. Doesn't mean you can't do whatever you want, it's just what I encourage.
