First experiences...tell me a story!

Post by serendipity! » Fri Dec 05, 2008 2:34 pm

As the sun rose I awoke from my playa dust bath. Oh joyous sunshine, lend me your warmth! Riding the esplanade, sunshine hits the thunderdome, off in the distance the whomp-whomp of opulent temple. I fall to the ground, in a fit of overwhelming bubbly deliciousness. Screams unavoidably escape. I am here, I am home. Let's go eat some pancakes!

I guess everyone's first experience is different.

Mine was definitely not like that.

Well...my very first experience would have to be a dust storm mid day sunday 2007 waiting to pick my ticket up from will call & almost losing my car in the dust; had never been in weather like that! but a better one is rolling slowly thru the line to get in monday morning & having the guy in the car next to me come running up to my window to do shots of JD & seeing so many people who were just soo happy to be at this particular place & time & excited for what the week was going to bring them...

2007 arrived late at night monday, stayed up for the eclipse, noted location of the man, and thought, "they must be using propane and a non-flammable structure so they can light it every night."

1999.. was delirious from Natural Ice and lack of sleep..refused to climb down from the man's feet (their really tiny!)..until my girlfriend started walking off with the bike and beer. Woke up later that night to 110 mph gusts. In the morning..my camp was still connected to our van..I was sublime..

2002 was our first burn. My wife and I camped in a 1997 Jeep Cherokee. Late Saturday afternoon we barbqued some steaks and some grubby, hippie looking guy that I'm guessing was a vegtabletarian walked past us and gave us a dirty sneer look.

Was 1996, on the night of the burn, I had no idea what to expect. There we were all of the attendees standing in one big giant single row around the man, yes single row, can you imagine that?! All of a sudden Larry Harvey steps up and says "Who wants to light the man?" I raise my arm and he says "Come with me"

I'll never forget that.

1996 heading out to the site which was like 12 miles out into the middle of the playa. we were in a Jeep, and all we saw were dust trails from the other vehicles, which were also hauling ass in the same general direction...we hit about 100 mph, and decided to let go of the wheel, because it would keep going straight due to the momentum....then we closed our eyes and tried to count to 10 before peeking....not easy...

then, all of a sudden we were engulfed in a dust cloud, and gradually slowed to a dead stop praying that any other schmucks out there would do the same, and not ram us...it was 5 minutes of sheer terror and delight, waiting for the impact that never occurred. After the cloud passed, we could see the city in the distance, and finally made our way to checkpoint, and set up camp directly behind, in between CP and the radio station, next to the naked fat guy from Virginia who had hollowed out his VW, filled it with ice and budweiser, and had strap marks on his butt from the lawn chair he pretty much lived in the entire week.

his name was Naked fat guy, and he was the bomb....those buds stayed cold ALL WEEK AND NEVER SEEMED TO RUN OUT.

it was a playa miracle.

The guy at the gate was desparate for a joint. "Please get me high!" he said.
That was my first experience at BurningMan.

It took me 10 yrs later to get there behind ya'll but 06 yes, believe it or not 06 was my first real burn.

Having met a couple burners prior to the burn, was delighted that my greeter was someone I knew!

driving in...ran into someone I knew on the first block we hit on the ring...

had joined up with a theme camp that yr...first time for them too....

Later on...after reeling it all back into my head (damned near impossible)
What are the chances a virgin would see 2 people they knew within 10 minutes.
Oh, and apparently I was one of the last Birgins to get the shit spanked ouyta me at the gate!
had to ride with my Bare ass out the window all the way from greeters to 3:00 plaza!

but to really sum it up.

I was finally home with the humanoid strain I had been gene spliced from!
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

In 2001 I get to BM on Saturday to help build the Temple…….I get in, park, make a playa angel, standup and take a picture of the mostly empty playa with my disposable camera…….that’s when I notice a topless woman walking toward me VERY quickly…..from the direction of where I took my picture…….she began to tell me about how rude it was to take a picture of someone without asking…….I handed her the camera and told here to look though the view finder. That is where she saw that from where I was you couldn’t even see her camp through the view finder…….She was ok with that and started to walk away…….that’s when I asked her if I could take her picture……..where she took a pose pointing at her camp……….boy do I love this place.

2008 - Arrived the first day at the height of the dust storm. Played hell finding our camp because we went left instead of right. Setting up was hell. Wife actually started to cry because she thought there was no way we were going to enjoy BM. We set up the essentials and went out dancing all evening. Had the time of our lives. We both look back at our trepidation that first day and laugh because there is no way we will ever miss BM again.

2008 was my first year and we got into camp prolly around 3am monday morning. I was so happy to have found the camp so easily. I started to unload my truck and got really overwhelmed with thoughts of "I gotta do this and this and this. move this here. etc." so i stopped and started drinking and hung out until i pass out in my truck. When i woke up a bunch more of my friends were there and already had their camps set up. so i put my tent and monkey hut up pretty easily and it held beautifly all week :) I couldnt have been more proud/happy.

2008 was my first time, too. Had just enough time to get my tent up before the awesomeness of the dust storm hit. Walking around in it was freakin' sweet, all Lawrence of Arabia and shit.
