Does playa dust destroy vinyl record collections?

Post by DaddyMassive » Mon Jun 22, 2009 4:10 pm

In people's experiences, how much damage is done to a vinyl record collection and decks during a week at Burning Man?

if you expect the record to sound exactly the same after, you are mistaken. I mean as long as you don't get caught in any dust storm you'll be fine, don't try to wipe them clean afterward either. Use a special Vinyl cleaning vacuum, they are rare, but saved my vinyl after the final year that I played vinyl. carrying it literally across the playa and back 4 times in 2 days made me switch to CD's and getting a lil bike trailer. CLEAN YOUR RECORDS Quickly after as well, as the dust has alkaline in it and is corrosive.

a good rule of thumb is:

If the item is dishwasher safe, than it's playa-proof.

usually.

If you can't afford it/them from getting ruined, then don't bring them

I do hear leaving records on the dash of your closed car is great for them..

As I suspected.
Thank you!

I will inform my camp mate so he can start the laborious task of converting all his music to 1s & 0s

FYI I know of DJs that have record collections they just use for burning man. If you bring them bring needles to as there are alot of turntables spinning at the burn every year.

If you love your vinyl, I wouldn't recommend bringing it to the Playa. There's the dust and heat to contend with. Plus the fact that you won't be able to effectively clean them until you get home.

And dust will get into the jacket/cover,

so, when you slide the vinyl in and out,

you get more scratches

hiss, pop, crack. sounds like a rock concert on Mars coming in on a Buck Rogers space radio on Uranus

Playa dust will kill your needles and records. Plus, who actually brings their Technics to Burning Man anymore ?? It's all about cd's. They are a lot lighter to pack around and if they get lost or stolen...no biggie. Just burn some more.

Dont bring turntables! Unless you plan to throw them in a burn pit at the end of the weeK!

Oh, you can throw them in the burn pit on the first day.

Or I can roll over them and over them (on some sort of tarp, of course) untill they are small pieces.

Put vinyl on a turntable in that heat, and it will be warped before the first track is done. I know.

I use a laptop and MP3's when DJ'ing. I use a shuttle express to emulate the CD controllers. I played a gig a few years ago at the Half Shell in Boston. A friend used vinyl and she lost a bunch of records because the sun warped them. She now uses CD's.

I'm bringing my vinyl and turntables for the third year in a row. Cover and put away everything when not in use and keep out of direct sunlight -- you'll be fine.

Painters tape works well for sealing off phono/line connections, usb ports, etc.
