Sue, we've known each other for a long time, and you know I wouldn't do that to you.

But then, I'm afraid you'd totally kick my ass.

OED-
I'm not surprised at that level of stupid, but am surprised that you let them "live". I guess they didnt read the Terminal "warning" signs on the way in.

We were a bit disappointed to be further away from Terminal this time, sadly having to push back our ongoing robot / apok blood-feud for another year.....
It was awesome to see so many of our favorite Terminals passing by @ bag /3 though, and
no robot arrests were made this year.
your witty rejoinder just flew over my head.....

I feel like alot of people here and on other topics (as well as on the real playa) are getting on their high horses about "darkwads" (congrats on using the BM lingo BTW).

I consciously decided not to wear any lights at night (I mostly walk). Who fucking cares? Now stop flashing your head lamp in my face or offering me your glowsticks (especially the ones that you dropped from your bike wheel/hair/neck, right in front of me).

With some exceptions, the people wearing lights all look like christmas trees and should be the ones called "darkwads" given how they look invisible within the mass of all other similarly decorated people.

Walking without lights is actually pretty safe, as long as everyone keep their eyes open and stop rushing. If you're riding a car and a bike and don't trust your eyes, have some lights, but please don't rely on them and end up going faster/blinder than you should.

I've enjoyed being called a darkwad out there. It's always a pleasure to push people's buttons (as I guess I'm doing here). I hope those people enjoyed feeling like they were bringing an important service to the community as they were riding away, mumbling that beautiful word as they were conditioned to, "darkwad".

I will keep calling you a Christmas tree and tell you to remove those annoying lights and we will all be happy playing that fun little game.

The first day we were setting up camp, some douche bags were walking down the street with construction gear on, hard hats, etc, shouting "get to work im the boss" in a cheesy guido accent. They were holding up a stop sign preventing people from traveling in the street. I would prefer to hear a loud gas powered scooter drive by than someone with a megaphone who is full of themselves!

Really dude? Well I care. I drive a flatbed truck out there, sometimes at night. It's a challenging driving environment, and non-illuminated people and objects makes it even more difficult. I want to be able see people when I'm driving, and I certainly would rather not run over anybody. I'm sure many art car drivers would feel the same.

It's not a high horses thing. It's a safety, common sense, common courtesy thing.

And of course if you are driving an MV, you can be a darkwad all you want to.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

YP:
of course, you are free to not light yourself.
and, if that is your choice, great for you.

Might I ask, (as an MV owner/driver, and bike rider), that, somewhere on you, preferably not crushable, you write or carry, in indelible ink:

" I have chosen not to light myself, or carry any markings for night illumination, and, therefore, accept any and all risk of being run over/into/down"

It would make me feel a lot better, if I were to run over you.

Note:
I do use headlights on my MV and bike....but, still.......it's hard to see a darkwad.

Costco Bartender with Shakey Hands

Post by WallstreetPanic » Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:18 pm

For those of you that have been following this thread from the beginning, I just want to say that the Costco bartender with the shakey hands is the best bartender on the playa. His shakey hands don't allow him to portion out alcohol in any reasonable fashion so his drinks are the strongest.[/u]

I spent most evenings on a large MV. Built from a bus. That thing needs a fair bit of stopping room, even going at the slow crusing speed we were doing on the playa. More stopping room than you get if you wait for the headlights to illuminate something, or for your own eyes to make out a darker patch in an otherwise dark landscape.

So you'd rather have a MV swerve to avoid you? That's a really great idea. Especially with the high number of other people walking/riding around.

And when I was out on my bike, I almost crashed into a couple of darkwads. I had to swerve out of their way and run the risk of riding into the people around me. If I had been able to see them from a bit further away, I could have corrected my course long before then.

And you do NOT have to look like a Christmas tree to be adequately lit up.

I'm glad you care, as you should as a MV driver who doesn't want to run over people. Thing is the environment will always be extremely challenging, there will always be duststorms and people who aren't visible. However you try to educate people, there will always be a bunch of unlit virgins and people like me who don't really care.

IMO wearing lights is a bit of an illusive safety. I'd rather know I am dark and stay aware of my surroundings. For the same reason, I don't wear bicycle helmets because I take way more risks when I do (and, like lights, I don't like wearing them).

I've read the back of my ticket, thank you. It's dangerous out there.

If you can't avoid dark people most of the time on your MV or bike, you might want to reconsider the safety of what you are doing (slow down/better brakes/ lighter MV's...). There will always be invisible people, and you have to consider them in your driving. How do you deal with sudden white outs?

I guess it's also the responsibility of dark people to not get in the way of MV's (they go slowly enough), as well as for example stay on the side when on a dark street. The only situation that feels a bit dangerous to me is dark speeding bike VS. dark pedestrian.

To the fucking douchebag we had to bounce from the speaker area of the Tower of Babel on Friday night. This cocksucker was crying like a bitch whining about something. He then chose to act tough and wanted to get violent with the RS crew. He was super fucked up on something and he was lucky he didnt end up in jail.

We were nice enough to bounce him away from the camp nicely.

In 15 years on the Playa...i have NEVER had to bounce anyone from anywhere !! I hope this asshole realizes he was a doucebag and was way outta line !!
Fuck you, fuck you...you're cool, fuck you !!

Your rationale sucks... sorry... YOU might want to consider the safety or lack thereof - of what YOU'RE doing - to youself AND to others... IMO these complaints are there to help edjumacate darkwads along the way about the dangers of being a darkwad.

People who have some kind of lighting on them are easier to see, therefore easier to avoid hitting... And why should an MV be forced to swerve at the last minute because some oblivious darkwad walked across or biked across the path of either another bike or MV? Yes I read you're not oblivious but you're one of 5000 darkwads out there... I gather you don't drink or never get distracted by a pretty girl, firespinners, art etc because that happens too... to every single person out there... including darkwads who are then an unmarked obstacle that you might bike into... thanks guy ~ I need to crash into something to feel the experience.

Since you mention defaultia, what advice are you given from childhood on about walking or biking around during dark hours??? Wear something white or light colored or better yet reflective because the sooner you are seen the better the decision your oncoming vehicle's driver will be able to make. I think lit up like a 'Christmas tree' would be even better than an accident on the playa that maybe keeps you from doing stuff the rest of the week or even better gets you airlifted out at a ridiculous cost.

Obviously you missed the most important part of this - we don't give a shit if you want to die - that's your stupid choice, but why harsh our mellow by including us on your stupid suicide plan??? Seriously? How do you think this would make someone feel??? We're at one of the most beautiful places on earth having to deal with a possible death or serious injury that we might have been a party to? Or worse yet, we're injured too? Thanks a lot buddy for the common courtesy! And then the LEO investigation up everyone involved's ass???? How fucking selfish can you truly be?

Sorry if I'm a bit vehement... It was crazy avoiding oblivious darkwads all week! If anyone had bought into your theory they would have been stupider for it... go play in traffic unlit and see what that gets ya... it's about what you're suggesting.

I'll tell you what, yellowpants.
I'm totally prepared to give you a "pass" on your darkwad status. If you're anything like me, which i think you are, and are ALWAYS aware of your surroundings and tend to move out of the way and be out of the way...like a ninja of sorts...and not once have you even come close to causing a collision out there due to not being visible...then I would call you one of the few "good darkwads". meaning...non-impact darkwads.

...however..you also said that you don't wear a bicycle helmet. If you ride in the city or ride like i do..(200 miles a week) and don't wear a helmet, then you are plain careless with your life. I don't care if you crash and kill yourself. ...but, if you don't get out of my way, cause for a split second you're not paying attention, and i don't see you and am not going at an unsafe speed...i crash into you and break my wrist(or worse) then let's just say this peacefully...I would be very, very disappointed, sad, upset and so on, and so on and so on and you'd better run, darkwad.

but i think you are the former..so tell all your friends to "not try this yourselves" unless they are like you.
blow.

a bit vehement? more like rabid.
Some of us "less illuminated people" are doing this with a reason; our Eyes are open! then we meet some self stylized Edumacator who most likely has A mega bright LED head lamp on thier head Macing away at all around them, washing the colors, and subtly out of what was a beautifull evening. then to berate them about the "unsafeness"

now that I think about it you are most likely the same "Bright" individual that shines the same head lamp on the folks climbing in a climbable art instillation. because theres nothing more helpfull than a light shining from below while you are trying to climb down.

And if you were the Dillhole that shined your whitie-britie at me after I asked you to stop at temple burn, and I came over grabbed your lamp and tossed it into the fire. I guess an apology is in order, please submit it to the Public msg board in Center camp by burn day 2011.

Well My advice for your own personal Enlightenment is; Shove a (Dry) glow stick up yer Spittoon. and aply to the Rangers so you can drive around in an art car with bright white lights telling every one how to Burn, while feeling that inner glo.

as always; Snark free of charge.

[And plez. Some one start a Darkwad thread so folks like this can jerk each other off in privacy]

I wore a couple of small led flashlights on a string around my neck.

They swung along pointing at the ground so I could be seen without the light being in my or anyone elses eyes cause I didnt want to be distracted from the colored lights of the city.

of course, the solution is logical and simple and easy and in consideration of everyone as a whole. those who disagree are simply being:

1. Stubbornly refusing to change one's opinion or action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so.

No, I already work gate. AND by the time they get to greeters and gate, if they are unprepared or have some fucked up idea of BM...Well, I don't think a two minute spew is going to change things one bit.
i disagree. I believe that I made a HUGE impact while greeting.

but i do LOVE that word you used...panopoly. is that like a pandemic monopoly?

edited(i googled panopoly) great word. thanks. ;)
I think greeting does make a difference but not to everyone who is completely unprepared or for people such as the weekend warriors who come to trash the place ....

Actually rabid more describes your attack. Mine at least didn't assume anything like you just did about me. I hate headlamps too! I hate those fuckers in my face just like you do... simple blinkies work just fine.

Please hold your breath for that erroneously demanded apology... starting NOW.

It's awesome that from my complaint about darkwads you assumed I'm a bright-lighting bitch! Thank you sir darkwad! You're an idiot and a fool! Now piss off wanker and get hit by one of the MVs or bikes you're so desperately trying to get hit by...

Agreed! Best burn ever!

And we saw many people doing that too... and that was fine... they weren't darkwads, even better they weren't brightlighting people either...

Worst year when it came to neighbors...

This year I noticed the porta potties on our block were full of baby wipes, tampoons and cans...

Our flag was stolen. Someone (I think the camp who camped behind us) rode their bike down the side of my boyfriends car. I had seen them fly by all week between parked cars and on the day we left I saw that they had in fact scraped the crap out of the car and also dented it. They also RAN over our stuff and I caught them on two occasions moving our belongings so they could move their cars around.

Other neighbor, walks into our shade structure and through it during the end of the week without a hello. They came on Thursday and were parked in a location that had poor road access. I would have understood the reason for this except that they would walk clear through our tiny shade structure with a dripping pee funnel, and would not say a damn thing.

STANDING next to my bike but not on it, someone tried to steal it and my boyfriend snatched them by the back of their shirt and the guy says "OH, SORRY DUDE."

The last Burning Man was definitely the penultimate of douche baggery hosting a panoply of jack asses.

I think this is the first year that I encountered a serious population shift.

New burners abound and need an orientation.

A quiz to buy tickets...

OR a population cap..
Sorry to hear that, but sounds like you guys could have been more assertive? While I'm happy to share my camp with neighbors I would not have allowed them to walk thru my shade with a dripping pee funnel, or ride bikes between our cars.

There were some fucktards in my life this year, but I didn't let them get away with it. Like the man/woman who came to our bar at Friday 4pm while it was closed:

I was getting ice for my water, they came to the bar "Can we get a sr-drink?" "I don't know. We're not open till 6pm." "What do you mean you don't know. Do you have any alcohol or not" she said indignantly "We're thirsty".... "Actually No, we have absolutely no alcohol for you" says I. The look of OMFG on her face was priceless. Like we owed her something and she wasn't gonna get what we owed her. How dare us!

I made drinks for people when we were closed all week - because they were the nicest people you'd ever want to meet, or brought cool schwag - they didn't ask or demand because I offered - but there's just no way I'm gonna take any shit from passersby looking for a handout but bringing nothing to the table, WITH ATTITUDE no less. FACK OFF YOU BLOODY WANKERS!

I grow weary of trying to teach people how to behave but I'm not gonna start by taking the week off when I'm at Burning Man. Thankfully I was not required to school many folks.
Trust me, my ability to be assertive was not the issue.

I guess it's also the responsibility of dark people to not get in the way of MV's

or anyone else.

That is correct it's YOUR responsibility.

If you choose to slink around in the dark it's of course your right to risk life and limb but it's NOT your right to endanger everyone else around you. Your refusal to protect the rest of the community from YOU is simply selfish. Why come to this community event if you don't care about anyone but yourself? Just go camping in the desert alone and you can enjoy the dark all you want.
You don't have to be skinny, naked and under 30 to be a Hottie!
