what to expect?
group of first timers anything to look for or expect?
Welcome! Leave all expectations at home but do a lot of reading. Read the survival guide and the first timer's guide, then read them again. Read the back of your ticket. Read this board for a wealth of playa-tested tips and tricks.
Being on the playa seems to force me to always live "in the moment". Once you know your survival and comfort are taken care of, you can be free to exprience things that nobody could possibly expect to have happen or to see.

Look out for everything!group of first timers anything to look for or expect?
Expect nothing!
You could have anything from a miserable time to a fun week to a life-changing experience. Impossible to know. (Isn't that exciting?)

Then, check out the Q&A forum. The answers to almost everything you could ask are in there. If you look back several pages and use the "search" tool at the top center before asking, your questions will be more entertaining and be answered more quickly and politely . . . usually.
Welcome.
eta: looks like you've found the guides. good-o.

Maybe there are some things that over the years I have learned to expect.......
1) To be hot, dusty, and tired sometimes
2) To have my face hurt from laughing so hard
3) To get to hug people I only get to see once a year
4) To have at least one random drunk pass out in my camp
5) To be amazed by the creativity and random acts of absurdity.
Anybody else?

While looking, go with the attitude of participating. BM is not a spectator event. If somebody needs help, give it. If somebody gives you something, accept it. If you are suddenly struck with an awesome idea, DO IT!

I would also expect there to be sunlight during the daytime.
At night it would depend on the drugs you're using.

Of course, every response was 100% truthful...and appropriate for such a vague wide-open question. Besides, at least one helpful post was made first, which according to the rules of the almighty Mods, opens this thread to Snark...
Ask more specific questions, f2m0u$72391, get more specific answers.

We qualify as "other", but not necessarily U.S.magic8ball wrote:this I am told is like clubs in Riga and Vilnius.
I am hoping for this, and other U.S. music.

I've only been once, the last one, but I can already tell be careful what you expect because that may very well be EXACTLY what you get. In other words, keep it positive. I saved a mans life, my truck key carefully attached to my pants inexplicably vanished, got seperated from an amazing woman while on our way to a tent to CENSORED, danced my ass off in my underwear('n this homey don't dance)(much I guess), gave a full bottle of premium tequila away to a bar that had been gifted to me, at the drop of a hat, when I was out of alcohol, hugged a sculpture of an angel for 1/2 hr during a bad dust storm (we had a connection, you will see when you get there), lost my bike for over an hour twice, one of those times it certainly had been "borrowed" then returned, my phoenix tattoo bled from its funnel tail feather during the man burn, I met a man that also had killed his dog as a puppy by accident and the both dog's lived thru it miraculously (we knew each other for minutes, he somehow new I had been thru this too), and the strangest part - none of this phased me, yet it also blew my mind wide open to the realm of possibilities. There's more - almost started a mob to pre-outrun the raining fire of the temple burn (we had some kind of feeling) Rode my bicycle full speed (I mean really flying) into a HUGE metal plant in the pitch dark and rose unscathed to the amazement of the folks nearby and myself, made a nice necklace out of stuff found on the ground, one day turned into two somehow, mysteriously reversing direction while riding across the playa at night, um what else, giving away lidocain patches and a cane that I had no idea why I had brought really, to a new friend that had turned her ankle, breaking down into a puddle of tears just from being in the temple (n this homey dont cry)(much I guess) sharing a wonderful embrace from a complete stranger due to said empathy, I could go on, and on, and on, and on. Whatever you expect, keep it positive. Trust me.
"what if one of these times the man says f it and decides to burn us?"

I am bringing my 16 year old son this year. He has been reading everytthing and I just took him to the Reno screening of "How To Survive the Apocalypse".
He loved it all and gets the concept of be open to everything and expect nothing. There are a couple of DVDs out there also that you might look into - I liked Dust Devils and Beyond Black Rock City.
