REAL techno

Post by saratone » Mon Aug 16, 2004 8:46 pm

Last year I noticed a disturbing lack of techno, that is the deep, quirky, glitchy kind. Anyone know of any sound systems/camps catering to my needs? I will also be bringing the sickest records this side of Germany.

I will be packing a unique crate to take with me. A lot of deep glitchy house and minimal techno.

I'm bringing soooooome minimal wierd stuff, but I'll have a crapload of real techy house and hard techno - it's much busier than the Detroit style stuff you're talking about - that's much better on 3 tables, anyway, and I'll be surprised if anyone has a set up like that....I'll have some real killer tech trance, too, and tribal techno. I'll be gifting my cd that's all tribal tech if you want a copy...
Thanks to Addis, I had more free time.

saratone: a friend saw you at the full moon recently and said it was "the best set she's ever heard".. and she's fairly "old school" if you will.
And I missed it!

glitchy minimal stuff...

Last year I heard 2 DJs playing stuff like that.. and it was a breath of freshness.. clicks for tha head bass for tha booty , oh yeah!

Speaking of techno...

Post by playadoc » Tue Aug 17, 2004 3:15 pm

If you have not, definitely check out:

http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html

You can get FAR more explicit in terms of what you do or don't like than just calling it "techno"... :)

Enjoy - this guy put a TON of time into this site and it shows.

I personally hate the idea of subgenres it further divides the dance culture. It is mostly attempts by djs to further market themselves and feel like individuals instead of just being another dj. It is all music and you either like it or you don't. Also everyone has a different interpetation of how a certain music should sound so who knows what you think is deep in one city might be banging in another. I have been booked to play deep house for a few shows and I always have to confirm they want DEEP house not just 4 to the floor. I play so deep most of the time that I am usually booked for chill rooms.

This has just been my opinion I am open to conversation though.

Hey for someone who is stuck in the 70s, that site was fairly informative, if somewhat overly detailed. It was especially fun to hit the little buttons in each sub-genre in rapid succession ... sometimes I could make them all blend into one. Really though, good guide for someone hopelessly outdated.

This site dredged up a memory of stretching out on the coffee table at my brother's place with all the speakers around my head blasting Kraftwerk's Autobahn ... wow. There's some ancient history for you.

I recently saw a flyer for a party that mentioned "Burning Man House." I still dont know what that really means.

Or you could go over to the Dark Side and dance to Industrial.

1. Don't dance to industrial. It involves too much time on the floor with your hands in the air pretending to be an angry cat.

2. Subgenres are good in that they give us music nerd dj's something to really debate. "This is electro-pop breaks...didn't you hear that Journey sample?" "No, no, no...it may have that sample and those long tones, but didn't you hear that 303 line? This is acid breaks, plain and simple." "I'm buying it." "No you're not. I am."

3. I don't think that it's the records that I play that make me a dj. A machine can play records. We call them juke boxes. A dj changes the records he plays into something that are his own. One of the reasons that I play all of the different genres that I play is that I don't want to be boxed in and I want to the freedom to move through a set by feeling the crowd or by moving them where I want them to go.

I know you weren't talking to me or talking bad or anything, Sandwichman - it's just a topic that's dear to my heart. We've had some massive debates on renoraves.com about what makes a dj and who does what and how and why...I think that if you love deep, play deep. For me, I'd rather not box myself in.

And hey, if you have anything banging that you don't want, I have a crap load of deep house and lounge that I don't really play. Trade?

I'll agree with Sam on this.

I think the part where we as the DJ can tell one hell of a story with music. My preference for now is Prog. Trance / NRG. Soon Psy and goa may be added to round out the story of how I see the music. And when a DJ tells the story very well, then you are supposed to listen to the sounds blended into one long track :) Thats the magic in telling the story.
