I am very concerned. i will be around 7 1/2 mo pregnant when the burn comes. I am a fire performer and love the burn. My husband and i where hoping to renew our vows, for our 5th wedding anniversary, on playa. I'm just worried about the heat, traveling, and everything involving the experience if i decide to go this year... Has anyone gone while pregnant or know some one who has and how their experience went and all that jazz???

Consider health insurance that covers a trip to Reno. On-playa care is free, but if you leave the event for a Reno hospital, that's when the bills would kick in pretty significantly. I don't know what travel health insurance rates are like for pregnant women, but I've seen offers arrive in my mailbox (from my employer) that were cheaper than I would have imagined.

Things could work out just fine. Or there could be any number of complications which would be really minor if you were in a city with easy access to full service medical facilities. If you go to the burn, you'll be hours away from any of that. And in that situation, would you be the person who doesn't get immediate care because you want to put off raising an alarm and getting evacuated from the playa and disrupting everyone's burn, or would you be the person who bolts at the first sign of trouble (an expensive and time-consuming bummer if it turns out to be a false alarm).

I loose my appetite at the burn, so you might take that into account. Advice from mom or sisters who are genetically similar? Sure your child will be interested to hear what was going on at 7 months, make plenty of photos and video - of course by the time they are a teen, we will all look tragic, style-wise.

I dream of being pregnant on-playa one year. I think it would be a lovely experience. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated, and force yourself to eat the minimum amount of calories required for your trimester and weight, even if you are not hungry. Talk to your doctor first, explain the harsh conditions and steps you've taken to prepare yourself for them. You'll be fine, darling. Just like the playa, motherhood is all about radical self reliance. Don't count on others to care for you and your baby.

i think that would make for a very special experience. if it were me, and i was healthy with no previous complications, i would take the risk. with proper planning to ensure you are safe and comfortable, it really could be amazing.

is it your first child? while i don't have any kids, i do think there are big differences between 1st and 2nd,3rd,etc pregnancies. however, i def would not say to you 'don't go bcuz you're preggo'...

& i can def tell you, seeing you on the playa would be a huge gift for me and many others

Okay here is your-friend-the-nurse's opinion, fwiw:

If you travel after 30 weeks, be ready to deliver at any random place. Bring a copy of your prenatal record with you, it's a standard form used everywhere in the US, easy for any OB or midwife to pick up and run with; that's what it's for. This is a common "unexpected" situation.

Think about the obvious things, like keeping well hydrated and then passing all that urine in some tiny amount every time you turn around. Are you the type of person who gets grumpy about repeated irritants when you are feeling hormonal already? Do you have good peripheral memory aides or a steady partner who will remind you of all the things you can't remember anymore? Don't set yourself up to be miserable.

And brace yourself here because I am going to reveal one of the best-kept secrets in our culture: pregnancy can still be deadly for the mother. In my job I see a lot of that, and it makes me really sad. Our US maternal mortality rates have not improved any for over 30 years. About half the time, cause of death is something that can be understood, and might have allowed for a rescue, at some point, with different care. But in about half of all cases, we have no clue. No fucking clue. We can describe what went wrong but have really no idea why. So, if you have done everything right you can still die, and being in some big city hospital might not help you one bit. Just taking that baby to term is already so dangerous that doing it in BRC hardly adds any risk.

So, I would say go for it. Find a nurse or somebody in your camp and be really really nice to that person. Find the med stations, and wander in to get your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Find the Ranger stations, and make friends with them too. Be nice to yourself. Pay attention to what your body tells you. Most moms do just fine.

You might plan your posse, for in camp, and when out and about, it's nice to have both a runner and stayer if something immediate comes up which it probably won't! If at night on the deep playa, you need some way for the responders, should you request them, to find you without landmarks.

I'm sure if you wrote on the FB and regional lists, people with actual pregnant on the playa at that term experience could PM you. Maybe start a pregnant on the playa FB group. But as we are all anonymous on the Internet, filter the advice.

(I came across a man down late in the deep dark playa, left my friend with the individual and ran to flag down a LEO, it all worked out. Thankfully he was by a distinctive illuminated sculpture to we could direct the response)

There is also a 911 on the playa note on the main burningman.com, not sure how current, and I would count on consumer radios to be drown out by too many users or stupid use of the wrong channel.

You could be a candidate for the PapaLegba on playa texting service, but it is complicated, may not work and they may not come in any give year. Ignore the people critical of the service - it always generates strong flames.
