If you could put Burning Man to music ...

Post by burning tent » Wed Sep 22, 2004 3:14 pm

One song.

I left thou sacred Playa at night with the dust wafting from a long line of cars. The first song I heard in its entirety was:

"In The Evening"

You know, when the day is done, by that techno group Led Zeppelin.

It may or may not encompass the "it" of Burning Man but it worked for me.

>Oh whatever your days may bring
No use hiding in a corner, cause that won't change a thing
If you're dancing in the doldrums, one day soon it's got to stop, it's got stop
When you're the master of the off-chance, when you don't expect a lot<

Oh yeah, and of course for the mythical Anita ...

>Oh, oh, I need your love, I neeeeeeeeed your love
Oh, I need your love, I just got to haveeee<

End transmission. ;~)

Depeche Mode's "Home" seemed to really touch me while I was Black Rock City....:

HOME
Here is a song from the wrong side of town
Where I'm bound to the ground by the loneliest sound
And it pounds from within and is pinning me down

Here is a page from the emptiest stage
A cage or the heaviest cross ever made
A gauge of the deadliest trap ever laid

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home
For singing these tears
Finally I've found that I belong here

The heat and the sickliest sweet smelling sheets
That cling to the backs of my knees and my feet
Well I'm drowning in time to a desperate beat

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home
For singing these tears
Finally I've found that I belong

Feels like home
I should have known
From my first breath

God send the only true friend I call mine
Pretend that I'll make amends the next time
Befriend the glorious end of the line

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home
For singing these tears
Finally I've found that I belong here

Sand In My Shoes got me when I got home:

Two weeks away
it feels like the whole world should've changed
But I'm home now
And things still look the same
I think I'll leave it till tomorrow to unpack
Try to forget for one more night
That I'm back in my flat on the road
Where the cars never stop going through the night
To a life where I can't watch the sunset
I don't have time
I don't have time

[Chorus:]
I've still got sand in my shoes
And I can't shake the thought of you
I should get on, forget you
But why would I want to
I know we said goodbye
Anything else would've been confused but
I wanna see you again

Tomorrow's back to work and down to sanity
Should run a bath
and then clear up the mess I made
before I left here
Try to remind myself that I was happy here
Before I knew that I could get on the plane
and fly away
From the road where the cars never stop
going through the
night
To a life where I can watch the sunset
and take my time,
Take all our time

[Chorus]

I wanna see you again
Two weeks away
all it takes to change
and turn me around I've fallen
I walked away and never said
that I wanted to see you again

[Chorus- 2 Times]

I wanna see you again
I wanna see you again

It stuck me how true this was. Not to any individual in particular, but to all of you, to BRC ... I want to see you again.

Brave Combo's "Nothing is Permanent"
Nothing is permanent
Nothing will last forever
Nothing is permanent

Rain falls and turns to mud
And then it dries and blows away, away
Grass grows in yards of green
And then it gets too tall and causes worry

Need leads to satsified
Which doesn't last so long and well
You know

All things, always change
And change is fast if it's not slow

Nothing is permanent
Nothing will last forever
Nothing is permanent

Where was the neighborhood
Before they marked off all the streets and roads
Who came to live here first
And does it really matter
I don't think so
New stores of new design
Look old and dated long before they fall
Buildings of any sort are just lean-tos and that's all

Nothing is permanent
Nothing will last forever
Nothing is permanent
An Undoing World--The Klezmatics
(words by Tony Kushner)
By the time we're done with dancing,
Elsewhere darling you'll be glancing
And the night's a river-torrent tearing us apart.
Merely melody entwined us,
Easily the ties that bind us
Break in fibrillations of the heart.
Don't cry out or cling in terror
Darling that's a fatal error
Clinging to a somebody you thought you knew was yours.
Dispossession by attrition is a permanent condition
That the wretched modern world endures.

You drift away, you're carried by a stream.
Refugee a wanderer you roam;
You lose your way, so it will come to seem:
No Place in Particular is home.
You glance away, your house has disappeared,
The sweater you've been knitting has unpurled.
You live adrift, and everything you feared
Comes to you in this undoing world.

Copper-plated, nailed together, buffeted by ocean weather
Stands the Queen of Exiles and our mother she may be.
Hollow-breasted broken-hearted watching for her dear departed
For her children cast upon the sea.
At her back the great idyllic land of justice
For exilic peoples ponders making justice private property.
Darling never dream another woman might
Have been your mother
Someday you may be a refugee.

A refugee, who's running from the wars,
Hiding from the fire-bombs they're hurled;
Eternally a stranger out-of-doors,
Desperate in this undoing world.

Mother for your derelicted
Children from your womb evicted
Grant us shelter harbor solace safety
Let us in!
Let us tell you where we travelled
How our hopes our lives unravelled
How unwelcome everywhere we've been.
What's that you say? The Fishy is getting greedy and doing two songs? Well I have news for you, this is really the same song--just the happy and sad versions! And the Fishy is above reproach!

For my boyfriend and me, it's all about Natalie Merchant's "Carnival":
I've walked these streets
a virtual stage
it seemed to me
make up on their faces
actors took their places
next to me

I've walked these streets
in a carnival
of sights to see
all the cheap thrill-seekers
the vendors & the dealers
they crowded around me

have I been blind
have I been lost
inside myself and my own mind
hypnotized
mesmerized
by what my eyes have seen?

I've walked these streets
In a spectacle of wealth & poverty
in the diamond market
the scarlet welcome carpet
that they just rolled out for me

I've walked these streets
in the mad house asylum they can be
where a wild-eyed misfit prophet
on a traffic island stopped
and he raved of saving me

have I been blind
have I been lost
inside myself and my own mind
hypnotized
mesmerized
by what my eyes have seen?

have I been wrong
have I been wise
to shut my eyes and play along
hypnotized
paralyzed
by what my eyes have found?
by what my eyes have seen
what they have seen?

have I been blind
have I been lost
have I been wrong
have I been wise
have I been strong
have I been
hypnotized
mesmerized
by what my eyes have found
in that great street carnival
in that carnival?

Ah, yes, the "Faith" video - which my then-teenaged brother dubbed "Worship At the Altar of My Butt." ;-)

Au contrare... I would pick Dvorak's Symphony #9, From the New World, mixed, played at 150% speed, at the same time as Rite of Spring. That was it for me...

For a endless search for truth in a world with a multitude of thought and emotion. I have found my calling for eternal sadness. i am blue. i am careacter. I have been born into this world where in places and in time i was not to exist. My past has no meaning and my future repeats itself.

DJ Tiesto- Adagio For Strings

If ever there is another burning man. theme it as if it were never to be. compose music as if your soul would never hear it again. create art as if ones eyes could never again thereafter hold its beauty. express in every moment being who you truly are and what you truly feel. take everything and send it's every form out into every world. And there would be a sadness overcome by the undeniable gift of love.

Little White Trailer

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Mon Sep 27, 2004 8:08 am

I was strumming and singing this newly penned wonder at anybody who would sit through it on the playa:

Little White Trailer
Copyright (c) 2004 All rights reserved

Phoned up on an ad for a little white trailer
Haggled the price down and when you came home later
You saw me there with a grin upon my face
How could I bring that kind of junk to our place?

Needed a little paint
And she barely fit inside our gate
I promised I'd get her ready for a holiday

1963 was the year but that's uncertain
Tightening the bolts down while you made up the curtains
Working in the sun got old fast, but that's OK
Propane in the tank and then we were on our way

(chorus)
In a little white trailer you know
With a little white trailer we go

Do your remember when
We took her to Disneyland?
Campin' out at the Anaheim KOA
Baby...

Baby was asleep on the cot in between us
Under a full moon, you could even see Venus
There wasn't room to do it right you did say
Camping is a time when you still find a way

In a little white trailer we go
With a little white trailer you know

Please understand
We'll have to clean out the sand
After we get back from Burning Man

(chorus)

in 2000

After a night of heavy party building ,crossdressing, art making explosions, flogging, dancing, singing, riding, fucking and screaming,
I awoke from a wonderful sleep, at the crack of dawn, to someone who had the nerve to blast, at full volume, Iggy Pop's
"Lust for Life"

And afterwards, nothing but silence.

It changed my life.

It now joins my playa CD's alongside Lost at Last, KMFDM, Queen, Amon Tobin, Mermen and Thrill Kill Cult.

Yeahy, that about sums it up. I love the way the drummer took that Bo Didlee beat all the way out with the highhat fully open, and David Bowie on the backing vocals makes it sacred!

The STANDELS: "Dirty Water"

I listened to that song in my car over and over on my solo exitus. (2 hours) But on the line "I love that dirty water" I sang: "I love that dirty playa...Owwwwww Black Rock you're my home!"

anyone interested in Burningman ring tones?

I want to gift but I'm not sure what a BM tone/melody would be like.

any suggestions? You could even hum it and send it to me and keep the copywrite for yourself. I can make it into a ringtone. I just think the right one/s need to be made.

what do you think?

I'll try to have the ones I'm making/thinking of ready soon....say a few days to a week or so.

I remember this, too. I was camped nearby, though damned if I can remember where, and probably heard the same "Lust for Life." This was a moment where the hinge turned and indeed, the world was never the same.
