from my limited experience, i will always recall listening to "Eat a peach" by the Allman Brothers driving across the playa while working for DPW...

and getting baked... along the way.

Since the quesion is out there...the music that I put my playa slideshow to was 'Sepia' from Paul Oakenfold's Ibiza disk. It worked well with the timing of my photos and the feel seemed right to me.

If you care the show can be viewed here, but be aware that it is 33Mb

As we approach Fernley from the east, we know we're close when the radio starts picking up Reno's classic rock station after a long dry stretch past Winnemucca of nothing but Christian stations, three of 'em (no cd in the jeep). Two years in a row the first song we picked up was the Doors "City of Night." It was dark and right.

Works for me.

Black Rock City - Song inspired by

Post by pyrozania » Thu Nov 25, 2004 2:37 am

i mean not to offend any of the technologically advanced music fans out there, but my non-synthetic tune of choice for black rock this year was definately iggy pop's "the passenger"

I am the passenger and I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped backsides
And everything looks good tonight
Singing la la la la la.. lala la la, la la la la.. lala la la etc

Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight

Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine
Singing la la la la.. lala la la [x3]

Oh the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side
He sees the things that he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride
Oh, oh, Singing la la la la lalalala

You said it, Pyro! One of my personal faves. I have always loved Iggy's ability to get away with failing to rhyme. I love what Elizabeth Frazier does in the Cocteau Twins. It's one thing to mumble or be unintelligable, and something sublime to abanodon language all together (she sings mostly phonics, playing her voice like a true instrument). Great theme music when you find yourself on the playa saying things like "Gabba Gabby Hey!"

Ooh...now I've got the Siouxsie and the Banshees cover of that in my head. *glee* And it is just a perfect playa song, isn't it?

Whenever I see the title of this thread, Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce always jumps to mind. Not the the lyrics neccessarily fit (although they kind of do), but singing the thread title to this tune:

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day
Till eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure and then,
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with

My best friend played "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka during a dust storm right before the sun reached the mountain tops, rewarding all who were immersed in the awe inspired week we call Burning Man, a moment to fully experience the true essence of beauty. I was sitting in front of our camp, meditating on the canvas that we call the playa, fully enveloped within a nebula of creativity, watching the most incredible people on the planet walk by being nothing more than themselves and impressed with the whole concept and existence of BRC. Within this state of mind, he played the most beautiful and perfect song for that very moment of existence...it rushed me with feelings that left me in a realm of bliss.

Pure Imagination Lyrics

Willy Wonka:
[Spoken]
Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three

[Sung]
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of
Pure imagination
Take a look
And you'll see
Into your imagination

We'll begin
With a spin
Traveling in
The world of my creation
What we'll see
Will defy
Explanation

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing
To it

There is no
Life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there
You'll be free
If you truly wish to be

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing
To it

There is no
Life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there
You'll be free
If you truly
Wish to be

Dust In The Wind - Kansas

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

[Now] Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind
Pabst Blue Ribbon - The beer that made Gerlach famous.

The last thing we watched before we left for Burning Man was the first season of The Chapelle Show. Needless to say, "I Wanna Pee On You" was stuck in my head for 6 FUCKING DAYS!!! Wouldn't chang a thing, I guess.

Sting --- Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
"I am... We are... It is.."
quote from the guy in the hat

Bad Music

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Wed Dec 15, 2004 8:52 pm

I beg your pardons in advance, polykarmatic, but I am really sensitive about what I feel are good or bad lyrics. You took the trouble to type them, so you must like them alot and I honor that, but here goes anyway...

I have always hated Sting. He kept me from appreciating The Police and I damn him for that.

Spoken with pretencious English accent:

"Hey mates, I penned this baby in the green room. Yeah, it's a song about the desert. It's a fire that burns. No shit. Oh, and love 'n' stuff. Lots of 'moon in June' rhymes! Yes, but I'm so tortured and vulnerable and whiney and I know how other blokes always feel. This one will get me laid for sure, mates! It's birdfeed! I'm STING!"

I thought the Kansas Lyrics would be cheesy, but you're right, Geekster. That is some good poetry.

put me in a melancholy but playa mood today.

It's called "To Live is to Fly" by Townes Van Zandt.

Won’t say I love you, babe,
Won’t say I need you, babe,
But I’m gonna get you babe
And I will not do you wrong.
Living’s mostly wasting time
And I’ll waste my share of mine
But it never feels too good,
So let’s don’t take too long.
You’re soft as glass
And I’m a gentle man;
We got the sky to talk about
And the earth to lie upon.

Days, up and down they come
Like rain on a congadrum
Forget most, remember some
But don’t turn none away.
Everything is not enough
And nothin’ is too much to bear.
Where you been is good and gone
All you keep is the getting there.

To live is to fly
Low and high,
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes.

Goodbye to all my friends
It’s time to go again
Think of all the poetry
And the pickin’ down the line
I’ll miss the system here
The bottom’s low
And the treble’s clear
But it don’t pay to think to much
On things you leave behind.
I will be gone
But it won’t be long
I will be a’bringin’ back the melodies
And rhythm that I find.

We all got holes to fill
Them holes are all that’s real.
Some fall on you like a storm,
Sometimes you dig your own.
The choice is yours to make,
Time is yours to take;
Some dive into the sea,
Some toil upon the stone.

To live is to fly
Low and high,
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes;

Shake the dust off of your wings
And the tears out of your eyes.

A few that were on a mix cd i rec'd in 2004:

Wear Sunscreen (spoken word) by Baz Luhrman (sp?)

I've Been Everywhere by Johnny Cash
Mentions Winnemucca!

And my favorite:
Where the Streets Have No Name by U2
Reminds me of Sunday after the man burns *where the f*** am I?*

I want to run
I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls
That hold me inside
I want to reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name

I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see the dust cloud disappear
Without a trace
I want to take shelter from the poison rain
Where the streets have no name

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We're still building
Then burning down love
Burning down love
And when i go there
I go there with you
It's all i can do

The city's aflood
And our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Open 24 hours a day 7 days a year

REDEFINITION OF IDENTITY
Music and Lyrics by Magdalen Hsu-Li
C. 1999 F.H.A.A.S.S. Music

I've been a torment to my mother and father
A loser, reject, dutiful daughter
Brutalized and terrorized, and ostracized by some
I've been open eyed and criticized,
Demoralized, and demonized by all the lies
Objectified, and fetishized by some
I've been a painter, dancer, lover, whore
An emblem of the dirty score
That lives inside of all of us
A shadow that won't go away
I've been raped and frightened to my knees
A good little girl who wants to please
Free as the breeze I laugh with ease
At the way we view social disease

Redefinition.redefinition.
Redefinition of identity

I am a drummer, singer, player, and writer
A person of intense inner fire
A music maker, a booty shaker, a big risk taker
I was the person who gave you free refills
When you were high on dope and drugged on pills
A superwoman all bluster and bluff
A wimp who can barely pick herself up
I've been yellow with pride and white at the gills
Black with anger and burning with skills
Red with passion and brown with age
Cause my mind is a set but my heart is a stage
I've been pushing and pushing all of my life
To evolve through truth and to change by might
I will never be done until I begin
To redefine who I am once again

Redefinition.redefinition.
Redefinition of identity

Well maybe you dream of being rich
As you're chasing after that big bright star
But do you really have insight and clarity?
Do you really know who you are?
It's a sea of sharks and charlatans
As you navigate round the bends
And sometimes you don't even end up
With any money, power, or friends
So I am rolling the dice as you call my name
I've got nothing to lose and no one to blame
I am young but with foresight I can see
A wider vision of equality
I am picking steam.ahead of the game
I don't know who you are but I know who I am
I am nothing like all of your other girls
I am thinking ahead for the rest of the world

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

Post by Orghua » Mon Jan 31, 2005 8:05 am

'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' by the Flaming Lips. A friend dropped by with the CD after BM02 and said, you have to hear this ... it is somehow so Burning Man. I listened and understood right away. The song is an amazing array of technology, creativity and chaos, yet strangely intriguing and pleasing. My daughter loves it.

One of the first songs I ever associated with Burning Man was Chakra's "Home" (or a remix of it, not sure...this is from my vocal trance days of long, long ago...)

Don´t be afraid, your world is dark tonight
For without love, how can your spirit sing?
You are a bird with wounded wings

You´re not alone
I´ve come to take you home
You´re not alone
I´ve come to take you home

I´ll show you life
I´ll heal your heart tonight
Everybody needs a helping hand
I can help you understand

You´re not alone
I´ve come to take you home
You´re not alone
I´ve come to take you home

You´re not alone

Come to take you..
Come to take you..
Come to take you home
You´re not alone

You´re not alone
I´ve come to take you home
You´re not alone

But there are many others that make me think of Burning Man in particular...
It's what you make it.

I always think of BRC when I hear old Frank Black solo stuff.....it used to crop up now and then on BMIR.
Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance" is nice and circusy for the fast-paced playa vibe. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is hot and dusty and introspective.
....and Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats".

No lithotriptor-thumpa-glowstick club noise, thank you.

Voyager - by St. Vitus Dance

So I roam, so I roam
Just to find my way
Through the labrynth
Of this complex modern age
And for a minute I stray
That's when I fall by the wayside
The world, they kick mud in my eye
I drag myself up, it's become clear
I look around to find the end of my travelling years
And then I suddenly realize
The mud... it's still in my eyes... it's still in my eyes..

So I love, so I love
This new found blindness
The other world has gone away
Leaving blackness
It is here that music lights my way
To the very last second of my dying day
Oh how the mud's still stinging me
But I dare not wipe it clean,
For I might lose what has become so dear...
The mud, it makes it all clear..

So I roam, so I roam
With the visions and the blackness
I try to make it to the otherside of madness
I travel to the ends of the world
For a rising sun
But all I find is a girl and a smoking gun
I think I'll spend more time in the wayside
I think I'll find something I can crucify
All in good time
Such a fine line...
I think I'll cake more mud in my eyes... more mud in my eyes...

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I’ve been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My shangri-la beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high and true, when movin’ through kashmir.
