Bad Behaviour on the Playa

Post by El Capitan » Sat Sep 06, 2014 10:33 am

While this was only my second burn, I'm sure I witnessed more bad behaviour on the Playa than last year. This included a guy take a leak outside the temple, only a few hundred yards away from the porta-potties (no queue), my girlfriend getting hit on the head by a thrown bottle during the burn (we were sat down and behaving ourselves), being told to fuck off when we asked a guy standing in front of us at the burn if he'd mind sitting down as everybody else around him had (apparently he'd been coming to BM for years and would do whatever the fuck he wanted, although he eventually sat down after the crowd behind us were slightly more forceful), and picking up stack loads of moop after the burn including dozens of cigarette butts and beer bottles which had obviously just been dumped there. There were other incidents, but these were the main ones that sprung to mind.

So I was wondering what other incidences of bad behaviour people experienced and whether this was greater or less than previous years. Over to you!

Remember, what you see in the course of the burn is only a tiny, statistically insignificant slice of the behavior of people at the burn.

After attending many burns, I have lost interest in "being in the crowd". I have seen the unpleasant behavior mentioned above a number of times. This year I left BRC on Saturday morning and had a pleasant drive home. In some previous years I have watched the burn of the man from a high point in the city - a view point I recommend. I love BRC, but I don't enjoy the crowded events on the second weekend.

There did seem to be an extraordinary amount of rude people this year. The absolute worst was a fellow village mate when I tried keep her from getting hit on the head with the hot dog poles. It was the very closest I've ever come to punching someone in the face. Given the opportunity again, I'll let the damn pole smack her.

The mascot for our camp was a moose. He was made of wood, with a Styrofoam filler. We had him lit up with El-wire, some LED lights, and solar lights in a border around him. We came home to him totally smashed to pieces on Tuesday night... and it definitely wasn't accidental. His legs were broken off, his head was smashed, and there were multiple impact points. On top of that, the Styrofoam inside of him made a massive MOOP disaster. Spent a chunk of Wednesday cleaning up...

I think there is always some bad behavior, but year to year, it is relatively the same for me. Worst thing ever was the guy who put his cigarette cherry our on MyLarry's forehead. This guy had been asked not to smoke near the fuel cart, and when he would not, Larry pinched out the ciggie (wearing leather gloves). There was still a burning cherry and the guy stood up and put it right out on Larry's face. Larry helped him sit back down. Burn perimeter the year the conclave was cancelled, we had a full cart of fuel and nowhere to go but next to the crowd.

But yeah, people pissing in my placed art project, people using my little art table to drink beer and leave a mess, whoever stole my velvet rope and stanchions ( got them back), all sorts of assholes. They're there every year. I think the more you attend, the more you notice it.

I noticed some bad behavior, but considering our change in neighborhood I actually felt like there was less of it this year, especially early in the week. The second weekend was what the second weekend is, yes, and I know some art got destroyed by drunken assholes, but for a city of 70k people there's always going to be a few bad apples. I dare say there are fewer than you'd find at any other gathering, and I honestly believe there were fewer this year as compared to last.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, but either way I'll be back next year and doing my personal best to make the city a better place.

I noticed way less assholes in person (though there were a few - I'm looking at you, guy with a janky-ass sound system in a shopping cart pointed at our camp who refused to point it away), but saw residue of them all over in the form of MOOP. Seeing paper cups in the blue water in the staff bathrooms was extremely disappointing - if anyone should know better, it's the volunteers actually working for the Org.

Got woken up one afternoon to a naked man drenched in sweat & sunburn stomping through an alley behind camp screaming "I'M NOT GOING BACK! YOU HAVE NO INTEGRITY! I'LL BUY YOU ALL OUT!"

He had two rangers in tow, both on their radios and looking very concerned.

I followed them from a distance as dude, who we named "Sloppy Joe", went from camp to camp screaming at the top of his lungs. Then he'd roll around on the ground, throw some playa about, & continue on his way.

"I'M NOT GOING BACK!"

"I'LL BUY YOU ALL OUT!"

This continued for a bit as two of the most patient rangers I've ever seen followed Joe all the while asking if he'd like to talk, or if he needed water or anything. It wasn't too long before two more rangers arrived to give chase in their cars.

Yes, Joey jumped on top of their cars to stomp & scream a bit.

"I'M NOT GOING BACK! I'LL BUY YOU ALL OUT!!!"

After maybe twenty more minutes of shitshow Joe decided to up the ante & got violent. Nothing in his path was safe. Kitchens got tossed, swings were thrown at the rangers, even a kick or two from the ground. I'm sure it was at this point that a final call was made, as shortly after two sherriffs arrived & took Joey to the ground. Once he was down & cuffed the rangers swarmed him, I assume to begin the healing process.

One of the rangers came over to chat & said Joe took an "N-Bomb". He said it was being advertised as "like acid", the reality being a 24 to 48 hour high with "intense highs & lows".

I just remembered that somebody in a camp nearby killed the camp generator by putting sugar in it, dumped trash on the bar over night and threatened a female camp member because they "didn't like Karaoke" and we were in a (not especially loud or late night) Karaoke Camp.

I watched both the man & temple burns from our tower, I'm not to fond of going into the crowd partially because the last times I've gone, the amount if MOOP left behind by asshats depressed the shit out of me. I can only pick up so much.

I treat the stuff I heard over the radios when Scott was in ESD as not to be broadcast in public--even ten years later or more, it turns out. It made me very cynical about burn attendees/participants very early on in my relationship to the event.

after temple burn, we had a nice fire going in our dryer drum fire pit out in the 3 oclock burbs. a campmate and i notice some rangers and a hippie out at our intersection and invite them in to share the warmth. My campmate is an experienced greendot, so whatever, we are happy to help out and be good hosts for a couple hours.

A neighbor from across the street pops by to asks me if she can burn a little cardboard. Sure, I naively say, and then she brings over a car trunks worth of corrugated cardboard. The firepit is raging at capacity and I don't want to disrupt the current scene, so I sigh, and tell her to just leave it and i'll deal with it. (and i do, in small batches, over the course of hours. )

Eventually, a middle-aged european dude comes over from across the street, with a brown paper bag and asks if he can drop it in the fire. I'm pretty annoyed at having already signed up to deal with one neighbors shit, but whatever, there is some room in the pit, and he assured us it was just that one bag of paper, so we say whatever and in it goes and the guys heads back across the street.

"MOTHERFUCKER" i hear my campmate exclaim. the fucking dude threw 4d batteries into our cozy intimate fire.I try to find anything I can to extract them, but when that proves futile I shove them deep beneath some coals and logs to try and minimize the possibility of boiling battery acid hitting any of us in the face. We head to dude's camp to express some rather colorful and unrestrained words.

He then had the balls to come back to the fire, and say he couldn't see any batteries and we were just fucking with him. By this point, the smoke is acrid, the flames are fucking green, AND YOU CAN HEAR THEM PHYSICALLY BOILING INSIDE THE FUCKING FIRE. When we assure him that they are most definitely in there, he concludes that *maybe* his traveling partner put some in the bag without him knowing, but he was still suspicious that we just did it ourselves and were trying to start some shit by blaming him. He's actually hanging around and being argumentative, and at this point I have to walk away from the situation before I just start beating him senseless (It's been approximately 25 years since I have thrown a punch).

The next day, we found the charred remnants of those 4D cells- as well as a few more AAs and AAAs- :/ and returned them to his campsite.

tl dr: the neighborhood has lost trash burning privileges in our fire pit. forever.

One would hope the catchment system for your pit (small ash and bits that filter out through the holes) would have caught any bad stuff from said batteries, to be hauled out with the rest of the fire remnants.
Good on ya for trying to help, too bad people were asses.

N-Bombed means given 25I-NBOMe, when being told that you've been given LSD.

It's really nasty stuff that can kill you (unlike LSD).

Here is something you can get to protect yourself:

It will tell you if what have is actually LSD or not.

I've heard that 25I can be great if you know what it is going in. The deaths are from people thinking it was LSD and taking a massive dose or from insufflation which is just dumb. It's a slightly rougher ride, to be sure, but from what I've heard chromesthesia is pretty fantastic.

It's your brain, so burn it as you will, but it's my hope you choose to keep this discussion a theoretical one as opposed to one rooted in personal experience. Particularly with your background, you should be looking at molecules and analogs and doing the math.

YMMV. :) And yes, your mother did put me up to this, and BTW she wants you to call her about something she found under your old bed.

This was my 10th burn and I have to say I saw the most moop, mostly beer cans, in the port-a-potties. I was camped at near the large sound camps on the 2:00 side, where you might expect to see it, but it really was found in almost every loo I visited across the playa. This is the worst kind of asshole mooping behavior because it takes workers, already doing a hard, shitty job in an extra difficult place, to deal with the problem. I have always heard from top people who work for Burning Man that losing port-a-pottie vendors will be the death of the event, and they have been through a few already.

Radical self expression now includes screaming PARTY! FUCK YEAH! over and over and a darling young couple fucking in the crowd during the temple burn along with cooking hotdogs on the temple embers. All of which I observed. I can deal with a lot of unconsciousness at the best thing I've ever been a part of but this shit is difficult.

Our camp included a 30' aerial rig owned by one of our members, a trained professional aerialist. Because these things are not for amateurs, we always tied up the rope when she or another trained aerialist was not using the rig. Early in the week a drunk guy from another camp wanders over and starts to climb the diagonal steel pole of the rig. Several folks see him and quickly ask him not to, but of course he does, bending the pole with his weight. Our aerialist was literally crying when she saw the damage, as she could no longer use the rig since was not safe for "deep drops". She confronted him later and from what I gather he had this "Hey, it's Burning Man" excuse. Basically her gift to the community was ruined, and when she got home she had to replace the damaged pole.

I saw a naked couple making out after the perimeter of the Temple Burn was broken, I looked away and was not offended.

As for cooking in the Temple embers: no offence either, if I was offered any of the food, I'd respectfully decline.

Sunday morning, after burn night, I stumble back from deep playa only to find that most of the toilet seats are missing from the portos out by the man on the 6 o'clock side. Between the lack of seats and bathroom MOOP (if you know what I mean), they were basically unusable...

What happened to the seats? There doesn't seem to be a logical explanation. BM Souvenirs? I doubt it. Some asshat playing a prank? ...

Ken was alone in our public space when this crazy lady rides her bike into the monkey hut and starts berating him for the name of our camp. She was deeply offended on behalf of marines everywhere. Lucky420 and I came running. I asked nicely if she noticed it was dye, as in dye fabric. She started yelling again about how our name was an offense to marines everywhere and how dare we. I laughed and said I had marines in my family and she was a asshat. She kept yelling and lucky convinced her to leave. As she was driving off I was yelling something about asshats and looking up what semper fi actually means.

She headed off towards Barbie death camp. I wanted to follow her to see what she thought about that, but we were laughing pretty hard at that point.
