2014 Satellite Photographs

Post by some seeing eye » Wed Sep 17, 2014 5:59 pm

In the past, satellites did not pass over the event often. New startups are launching satellite constellations which fly over BRC often. One is Skybox Imaging, acquired by Google.

You can see the results for 2014 at http://www.skybox.com/blog/the-transfor ... urning-man which links to https://mapsengine.google.com/103310413 ... authuser=0.

Really fun to watch. Anyone know what that big blank spot on 2:00 by G/H is? Seems odd that there would be an empty camp there, unless whatever was there doesn't get captured on Satellite very well.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the 2014 stories board, since that's a better fit for pics from the 2014 event.

Great post, and hooray for satellite startups. The company (who shall not be named) who did the satellite passes over Burning Man for years and years was bought up by a larger company a couple years ago, and the new owners don't believe in gifting the image to the creative community. When I inquired about getting this year's high resolution imagery for personal use, they told me their rates would start at over $600 (apparently it's a licensing deal).

Trilo, there are at least two companies in this space today. More will enter.

A satellite constellation - dozens of individual satellites orbiting - can pass over and still or video, ultimately several times per day. Generally the constellation is going to cover say +-50-60 latitude. This means several times per day entry and exodus coverage. The resolution will slowly improve over a many year cycle.

I think the company I cited has a mobile app, "let me show you were I was".

Google bought up SkyBox, which is where the gif the OP posted is from. So, it's Google, yeah? Oh boy.

Nope, different company altogether. As far as I'm aware there aren't any issues with personal use of the (unfortunately) low resolution that skybox/google has made publicly available.
