Toxic smoke, wednesday night, was that the burning lotus?
So, whatever the hell was burning wednesday night, was toxic and made it hard to breath Smelled like burning plastic or chemicals used in particle boarding. Seemed to me it was coming from the burning lotus. The smoke coming from it appeared black and it burned an awfully long time for a wood structure. I am not placing blame and fully admit my accusation are baseless, just on what I saw and smelled all over the playa. Just trying to confirm my suspicions. Whoever the fuck it was burning toxic shit should be ashamed. I could barely breath and the long term health effects are yet to be determined..... I felt so sorry for those closest to it.
Any thoughts?

I think it was Wednesday night, but I might be wrong - an RV exploded.

Yeah, and I recall a Ranger shooing away burners with the all to ubiquitous cell phones saying "this is not something we want to advertise" but, honestly, I'm not 100% sure it wasn't a dream or something like that.

Yeah an RV burnt out on esplanade on Wednesday, it was more afternoon than evening though.

Yep, had a gas can next to the generator. Spark from generator set off the vapors. PLUS they had their gas cans store UNDER the vehicle. Bad juju all around.

Ahh, that makes more sense. Thanks for the info. I in no way meant to besmirch the good folks lighting up the beautiful lotus.

Bet that was good for some fines.tamarakay wrote:... PLUS they had their gas cans store UNDER the vehicle. Bad juju all around.

I heard the RV was someone's year round home so any fines probably ple in comparison to losing everything they owned.

It was also right by HEaT-fortunately, someone was thinking quickly and pulled the burning RV away from the equipment yard, and kept it from being much worse.
Re: Toxic smoke, wednesday night, was that the burning lotus
I happened by as a tow truck was pulling the RV onto the playa. I didn't see the fire but - not to make light of it - the RV looked like the photos you see of bombed out buses - some parts were just skeleton. Fortunately the guy got out without injuries.

Thanks for posting this.
I need to install a much-much-much longer fuel hose from my 6 gal. BERG system gas can to my little Honda generator so that the can sits a good distance from my generator.
And, I need to move my other gas cans to the far end of my trailer. All my gas cans are in secondary containers and my little generator sits in an over-flow tray.
Thank you....

Pretty shitty genny to be kicking off sparks!

We had the rangers come by and commemorate our theme camp for our exceptional job storing our gas/generators. They must have went around checking this after the incident.tamarakay wrote:Yep, had a gas can next to the generator. Spark from generator set off the vapors. Nothing a good baffle box can't cure.jneilvindy wrote:Pretty shitty genny to be kicking off sparks!

Our genny became an art piece when it caught fire. Melted the baffle box to it. We put it out in front of the camp hoping someone would steal it, but finally had to take it with us.
Many thanks to whoever shouted 'fire!' To alert us, and kudos to our Fearless Leader for having fire extinguishers everywhere.

Wow Pink, so glad someone saw it and you were prepared. What did you make your baffle box out of?
Earth Guardians and BLM came by checking gas storage and someone (i'm looking at you Ken) had left a gas can in the baffle box next to the generator. We moved it and got a water bottle out of the deal. They did like the size and location of our fire extinquisher though.

Not sure what the box was made out of, think it was plywood & insulation.
