No accessible porta potties on the playa

Postby Neil Sperry » Wed Sep 16, 2015 3:23 pm

There were no accessible porta potties on the playa they were only on the streets. This means people with disabilities have to travel much further to go to the restroom than able body people this is a clear discrimination of disabled people.

Then do something about it instead of crying "discrimination" all of the time. Are you sure you don't have a Mom & Pop burger joint to sue and close down too? Things don't always go our way. We live in an imperfect world. That's the way it goes. Make better plans next time.

Hi Neil, Welcome to Eplaya. You may want to mention that in a feed-back form. Are you new to the event? First year perhaps? This is the very first time we have had ANY pottys on the deep playa. It was a great addition and saved the ground from being used as a toilet. I cheer any improvements. I'm also sorry they didn't add accessible units at every bank. Honestly, this is the first time it's come up. I worked everyday on the Porta Potty Project out there. Next year will be better. (Seriously, write a feedback report on this matter. We are just a chat room.)

I may be wrong, but I think the last year I was there (2013), they didn't have accessible JotS on every bank in the city. If they did, it was a relatively new thing.
It is dreadful that there wasn't an accessible option out there. If you're using muscle power or charged batteries you may simply not have enough to go to another bank. Ratty's right, feedback form. Also might be worthwhile talking to Rat Lady from Accessibility Camp. (I'm not sure of the name.)

I demand a trans-gender double-seater JOTS at every bank for the nights I wear my push-up bra and cocktail dress.

A complete stranger must be available to use the stall en duette so we can chat fashion.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

Why talk to the Rat Lady from Mobility camp? RobbiDobbs has been in charge of the Porta Potty Project for approx. 14 years. Her camp is 'Potty Central'. We put signs on and took them off again 1275 times. Yes. that's how many portos in general use. (Not counting the staff and private ones.) She orchestrates the delivery of TP at night and early morning while the UUS trucks are sleeping. She sorts the moop collected at the banks by her volunteers and delivers it to the garbage collection site. As well as the on-going adult potty training program. You can reach out to her here on eplaya or on the FB page, 'Burning Man Porta-Potties".

I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience. But then again, didn't we all have at least one.

Rat lady is an excellent resource for anyone with mobility issues and is a strong voice for accessibility needs. It is not a slight on RobbiDobbs to get additional voices on the issue. I have found that it is a good thing to get as many varied voices as you can.

Agreed. It is my experience that when self-advocating, it helps, a lot, to work on more than one front.

Robbi and the rest of us at the Pottie Project have no control over USS and the portos. We work with them.

As elderberry said above, use the feedback loop and let the Org know. That is the best bet for getting something changed with regard to vendor services.

One way to get action is to tell someone that cares. If you care, hit the link and tell someone. http://burningman.org/event/feedback/

If you don't care, hit the 'back' button.
