Still life # 4: lovers on the couch

Asleep.
She can’t breathe
but to strangle him
ceaselessly

in the desert
this cinnamon skinned Francesca and Paolo
caught on the couch
lay petrified, carved from a night of spent
longing…

a mile of desert playa between
the circus lights
of the esplanade, these lovers
find themselves out of water,
out of sight, out of modesty…

entangled and asphyxiated
from the violence of sighs
they will wake, dizzy and frail
as if from an xtc
binge

and wonder how
is it the earth turned? Where
did this orange moon come from?
From where did these petals bloom
in the open desert?
