Post by Canoe » Sat Sep 03, 2016 3:52 pm

Exodus has officially begun! Currently, the wait is under an hour to leave the city. We will update hourly for the remainder of Exodus.

https://twitter.com/bmantraffic

Please make sure your loads are tied down when leaving the city. no loose bags. We have had loads dropped on the roads already.

Online maps are showing this stretch of I-80 Westbound as experiencing delays: by Sparks from 659/McCarran westward and on the loop from I-80 Westbound onto 580 South.
Yet, online cameras look pretty good.

A short patch of light to moderate rain coming in from the West.
Don't know if it will be enough to impact travel on the playa, or delay getting off the playa due to rain accumulating at the edge of the playa.
Should reach Gerlach in an around hour & fifteen.

At 8:18 AM, it was wet enough to leave some puddles on the ground in Gerlach:
  • Expect some accumulation of water at the edge of the playa. In the past, this has shutdown letting vehicles off of the playa onto the highway.
  • Parts of the playa may end up wet enough to halt movement of vehicles on the playa.

Exodus appears to be going really well. From twitter.com/bmantraffic, with a report every hour:
  • there was one report with a max wait time of 1.5 hours,
  • fifteen reports of waits under one hour, and
  • seven reports of no waiting time.
The Gerlach web cam showed that there was regular vehicle flow off of the playa, even with this morning's brief rain.

No issues seen at:

I-80 through Reno and the Sierras looks pretty smooth.

What I am loving, is every time I've had the Gerlach webcam running, it's showing orderly groups of well spaced vehicles flowing through Gerlach and sometimes visible in the background heading South from Gerlach on 447. Not once have I seen congestion, bumper-to-bumper nor any of the zoo we used to see years ago.

Graph of early times for Exodus 2016
graphing the reported wording of Exodus is interesting
for "under one hour" it is graphed at 55 minutes, to differentiate it from when the green line is the min of "one to two hours"

Handy to have one window showing multiple States, but I find that the Incident data lags compared to the original sources (links posted earlier) and then continues to be displayed long after (hours after) the incident has been cleared.

Burning Mans Traffic's latest time update isn't '5 to 6 hours', nor '5 to 7 hours', nor 'up to 6 hours', but "longer than 5 hours", which covers a lot of ground...
So anyone's guess what the upper limit is.
